@edgarblythe,
How about a hitch in time saves nine.

NEW YORK (AP) — We double-dog dare you to check this out.

Two dogs got married Thursday night at an extravaganza to benefit the Humane Society of New York.

Bride Baby Hope Diamond, a white Coton de Tulear with black-gray markings, was led down the aisle, resplendent in her canine couture gown.

Surfing goats surprise beachgoers in Orange County

The owner of two goats in Orange County, California, has taken his animals surfing on the Pacific Ocean.

Beachgoers in Orange County were treated on Wednesday to the unusual sight of two goats surfing the Pacific Ocean waves.

The pair, a nanny called Goatee and her kid billy called Pismo, stood on surf-boards and cruised on the water as bathers looked on.

The goats' owner, Dana McGregor from Pismo Beach, originally got Goatee to help with gardening duties, or eating unwanted foliage, on his property. But he soon started taking her with him when he went out, including trips to the beach.

Then he thought to put her on a surfboard with him. When baby goat Pismo was born in March, Mr McGregor put her on a board too.

He then asked surfer Mark Gale to see if he could get both goats to ride on one board together.

@Reyn,
My conservative self re some aspects of humans and animals together starts to flume up here, but that's too bad, I love this. Plus I'm a fan of Pismo Beach and environs (yes I know this is video'd in Orange County), quite far to the south of Pismo.

Guinness World Record for human mattress dominoes toppled in China

The world record for the largest-ever chain of human mattress dominoes tumbles in China, as 1,001 volunteers safely fall flat on their backs in a shopping mall in Shanghai.

One thousand and one Chinese volunteers set a new Guinness World Record when they successfully created the largest-ever human mattress domino rally, China's state media reported.

Volunteers, mostly domino lovers, first carefully arranged and leaned against 1,001 mattresses in an empty section of a shopping mall in China's financial hub of Shanghai, being careful not to fall back and ruin the rally before it even started, CCTV reported.

"First of all, we need good teamwork. All the participants, from the first to the last, must act like one person, and that is dominoes. Then it must be accurate. The mattresses must be evenly arranged. It's one of the characteristics of dominoes," one volunteer said.

Eventually the first mattress toppled, and it was ten minutes before the last one came down to finish the rally.

Cheng Dong, an authenticator from the Guinness World Records watched the event and then presented the team with an award certifying their record breaking status.

"For an event like this involving 1,000 people to succeed first time is not just about luck. All other conditions must be correct. First of all, all the participants must fully understand the rules," he said.

"Second, our volunteers were all very brave. No one dodged when the two-metre-high mattress fell onto them. So the challenge was very successful," he added.

Currently on the Guinness World Records website, the holders for the Largest Human Mattress Dominoes record is La Quinta Inns and Suites in the United States. 850 American volunteers participated in the event in New Orleans in February this year.

US town: Feline mayor is the cat's pyjamas
15/07/2012 7:30:00 AM

The Associated Press
TALKEETNA, Alaska - The mayor of a sleepy U.S. town is feline fine.

The part-Manx cat clawed his way onto the political scene of Talkeetna, Alaska, through a write-in campaign shortly after he was born 15 years ago.

http://images.sympatico.ca/images/Feeds/cp/oddities/AKSB101-715_2012_002747_low.jpg

KTUU-TV reported Friday that residents didn't like the mayoral candidates years ago, so they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs as a write-in candidate. The town has nearly 900 residents.

Although his position is honorary, Stubbs' popularity is real. His election earned him enough press to catapult the town at the base of Mount McKinley into a tourist destination.

Residents say they're happy that their stubby-tailed mayor is promoting tourism. The general store where Stubbs hangs out says it gets dozens of tourists a day asking for him.

New York area homeowners turning to "lawn painting"

By Christopher Michaud

NEW YORK | Thu Jul 19, 2012 4:30pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Despite the summer's persistent heat waves, the grass really is greener in some neighborhoods in New York and New Jersey.

Homeowners with brown, dried-up lawns are turning to "lawn painting" to liven up their yards.

Business is booming, according to Joe Perazzo, who launched his lawn painting company in New York's most suburban borough of Staten Island a few years ago, inspired by the tinting process used to color professional athletic fields. Other companies have sprung up in the region and elsewhere in the country.

"We've had a lot more calls and jobs in the past few weeks," said Perazzo, who added that this season's heat has been particularly hard on lawns due to a lack of rain.

For about 15 cents a square foot ($1.61 a square meter), or $150 for 1,000 square feet ($161.40 for 100 square meters), Perazzo will spray a plant-based, non-toxic turf dye on lawns or even dried-up shrubs and trees.

The biodegradable spray can last up until next spring's new growth if grass is truly desiccated, he said.

For lawns with a bit of life left in them, the paint will last for "two to three mows," he said.

In such hot weather, with temperatures hovering near the triple digits, lawns are not growing very fast, he said.

Rich Pacailler of Howell, New Jersey, had his 1,500 square foot lawn sprayed this week.

"It gave me the green lawn I've been working for," he said. "I come home and see I've got the greenest lawn on the block."

He said it was very natural looking, "like new sod."

"It's not hampering the lawn, but really showcasing it and giving it that curb appeal," he said.

Perazzo said he can custom mix the lawn shade, "depending on how yellow or brown the turf is."

Someone recently suggested painting a lawn red, white and blue for the Fourth of July holiday, he said.

"I haven't gotten into blues and reds," he said. "But I've researched it, and it's a definite possibility."
