I received this today from an immigration reform website:

For months, Republican obstruction has slowed work on immigration reform in the Senate. And now we know why. Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl have been working on a bill that ignores real immigration reform so they can continue to use immigrants as a political punching bag.

The Senators from Arizona have concocted a bill that does nothing to fix our broken immigration system. Their “border-only” bill focuses merely on enforcement and security - it doesn’t help our families, our communities, or our economy. It’s what you’d expect from senators who agree with their state’s decision to legalize racial profiling.

@plainoldme,
It's an election year. Democrats are saying the same thing. Here's a Dem who doesn't even use the word 'comprehensive' in talking about reform LOL.

No discussion of immigration reform is possible without first addressing real border security. ~ Jon Hulburd

@plainoldme,
At times it is, as is any other type of fiction.
Even nursery rhymes were once used for that purpose.

But, are you saying that ALL science fiction is used as social commentary?

@plainoldme,

Obama is guilty of racial profiling, so liberals legalizing racial profiling is not unthinkable.

@ebrown p,
It seems as though all your loyalty and empathy is for the illegal alien, with none for your fellow citizen or your country.

I have never accepted these us versus them arguments.

You can have loyalty and empathy for both immigrants (legal or not) and Americans. In fact, there are a great number of American citizens who want their friends and families to be able to get legalized. And even more American citizens who don't want to be singled out based on the color of their skin.

Incidentally, I also believe you can also allow gay marriage without hurting heterosexual marriages, and you can let women vote without ruining the institution of democracy for men.

@H2O MAN,
Az should cut off all power to LA that comes from AZ plants.
If LA wants to have a boycott, it should be a complete one.

And Az should refuse to ship produce or cotton to any state or city that has called for a boycott, and they should cut all economic ties with any state or city that threatens to boycott them.

You aren't too clear on the concept of boycott, are you. (Refusing to sell produce or cotton to people who are refusing to buy them from you is rather redundant).

@mysteryman,
They could stop sending power to the grid but that would impact large areas of Arizona and California and that seems very counterproductive. On the other hand, that might get California to stop building all their utilities on other people's back yards.

What do you think about the concept of equal loyalty to everyone, whether they're your fellow citizens or not?

@engineer,
Actually, I don't think they could. Arizona doesn't own powerplants. Arizona Public Service (Pinnacle West) operates many, and owns at least part of most of them. The largest owner of the two big units at the Four Corners Power Plant is Southern Cal Edison. Same for the Palo Verde nuclear plants. Gets kind of complicated, huh? Anyway, Pinnacle West has shareholders.

California does have a tendency to export their pollution, don't they?

You certainly need a Girl friend/boy friend to set you straight. Loyalty must begin at home.

I do have a problem with, say, a U.S. citizen being hauled downtown because he/she forgot to carry his/her wallet with her that day.

How do you feel about immigrants being hauled downtown because they forgot their wallet that day? And if your feelings are different for immigrants than for citizens---how do you expect the police to know the difference? Remember, neither one has an ID. That was the problem to begin with.
