Profiling is definitely bad, because it blinds you to the criminals who don't fit the profile. (If you think terrorists are only single, young men, then you ignore the mothers, or grandmothers, who get blackmailed into delivering bombs.)

And there's a difference between deliberate profiling, and using one's experience. Although I'll add that allowing experience to prejudice your decisions too much is a danger as well.

That's the same thing you said before but in different words.

@hawkeye10,
I have criminal justice majors among my students. Fully half of them write that they chose criminal justice because they like to control people and to be in charge. Fortunately, the other half chose criminal justice "to serve the community." It is the former that I worry about.

That is not necessarily true. The police r smart enuf to know that NOT every bad guy
will fit the profile, JUST MOST OF THEM.

Thay will be subjected to psychological testing in an effort to weed out weirdos.

I know of one who was weeded out by a psychologist,
merely because his father was a Christian minister.

@plainoldme,
It's fascinating how every subject is carefully selected and utilised as a very lightly disguised facility to draw attention to the important social standing of those doing the selecting.

I used to say, many years ago, that whenever I was introduced to a person in a pub or a club who had an offspring of their loins at a university that it would be a matter of no importance whatsoever what the subject of the conversation was but that I would be informed of this fact within 30 seconds of the conversation beginning.

It's about time some folks recognised that ol' spendi has been around enough to know that the whole gamut of the social hierarchy from top to bottom consists of nothing else but a bunch of wankers, toss-pots and chancers and that no amount of trumpeting will ever convince him to the contrary.

"I have criminal justice majors among my students" is a case in point. That flags up control freakery goodstyle. What it has to do with Arizona or millions of Mexican bandits pouring over the border to seek the good life as advertised on TV I cannot imagine.

ya, it is smart to expect the current situation to follow the norms, until it becomes clear that it does not. To do otherwise is to refuse to use the noodle that God gave you, and it is stupid. Stupid people and peoples almost always get beat and often beat up as well by smart people and peoples. The Care Bear/Barney view of the world that so many poorly educated moderns carry around is nice when life is by chance and the hard work of our ancestors easy enough to sustain such illusions, but we are past that luxury for the time being.

I think you are overly optimistic.

1. I believe you mean "most of the ones they catch", because when we talk about criminal behavior we are suffering from a selection bias. We're basing our statistics only on the criminals we catch. This is another danger of profiling, because profiling leads to catching criminals that fit the profile, which reinforces your profile, which leads to catching more criminals that fit the profile....
2. "Most of them" means more than 50%; I hope cops aren't missing 49% of criminals just because "most" criminals fit their profile.
