I saw a report last night on Fox News that a number of states were going to punish Arizona with some sort of trade sanctions and that a number of others were thinking of bringing in similar legislation to what Arizona has done.

Was it true?

@spendius,
New Mexico is thinking about relocating so they don't have to share a state line with the hateful Arizona.

That's what I read.

On my iPod. Or X-Box.

"Information can be a distraction".

Or something.

Yes 37% 34563
Consistent with the other evidence that the Arizona law is supported by Americans.

You got nothing!

Once again, you proudly prove your ignorance. Unless one is preparing an analysis, one does not sit down and read raw legislation. It mostly consists of provisions in other law incorporated by reference. An executive would rely on a staffer's analysis. I realize this is hard for you to understand, since you are a person whose writing is comparable to that in bumper stickers.

@Advocate,

You proudly wear your ignorance on your sleeve.

You are a fool if you think the Obama administration (the bumper sticker slogan administration) has a clue.

I am so tired of those contributors to this forum who haven't a clue as to what a Nazi or a Fascist or a Communist or a communist is . . . and, apparently, comedian Lewis Black has the same problem when it comes to glenn beck.

The AZ situation triggers this funny response:

@Brandon9000,
Typical that you fail to understand the difference between "did not" and "can not".

Also, this whole thread is dedicated to the racism inherent in this law, so all you have to do is read the effing thread.

@Brandon9000,
I was going to ask if you'd read the rest of the thread since we've had this discussion several times, but at 58 pages long, maybe it's just worth reiterating. This law is racist because it cannot be enforced without profiling and that profiling will clearly be based on skin color. As I see it, Arizona police have two options. First, they can ask every single person they stop for proof of citizenship and take everyone that cannot show it to the courthouse pending proof of citizenship. Of course since Americans do not have to carry proof of citizenship around with them, so a decent number of citizens will be carted off to jail under this scenario, so this isn't going to happen. The second option is to just go after people with brown skin. This means that American citizens with brown skin will be frequently stopped while those with other color skin will go by unmolested. Don't think that Arizona police will harass citizens because of their skin color? It happened in Arizona earlier this year.

@engineer,
Is profiling bad, or unavoidable? when the cop on the street decides who to look at he in part depends upon his knowledge of who the bad guys tend to be, and on his instincts which are honed by experience and are in part irrational.

I think this call to void all profiling is impossible, and is part of an organized and ignoble effort to void humanity...to live in a fantasy world.

we have real problems, we need realistic and effective solutions. all of this theory about how such and such is "bad' simply because our concepts do not mesh with human reality is not much use. the correct response to this cry of foul for profiling is "it is time for the adults to take over, please grow up and join us".

@hawkeye10,
But where would you find them hawk and what would they do?

The nature of power is such that even if you did find them they would quickly become the same as those they replaced. Donald Duck and Albert Einstein would behave just the same on a hot tin roof or in a pit of poisonous snakes.

find who, reasonable and educated people who can both figure out what the problems we face are and come up with reasonable ideas for solutions that might work?

humanity has been able to reach this level of effectiveness on a regular basis, I think we can do it again.
