I think that is an artifact of some glitch between the computer screen and the seat of your computer chair.

I'm conflicted on borders around the world. Sometimes I think they are useful, and in many cases I think they are imbecilic. I generally think the border between the U.S. and Mexico is silliness to start with, but since it did, I get the ample reasons of parties on both sides to keep the divide, while I sometimes wonder. I'm certainly no fan of mexican (and other) drug cartels, but look - we're (the u.s.) the cheerful user group, with policies for decades that ramp up the value of the produce. Meantime, the mj production in my old area, humboldt county, is dealing with cartel types.

Meantime, indios (I don't know the presently correct word for very long time natives in mexico and the u.s.) and the spanish were here in the southwest long before people came from Iowa (was it 1883 in Los Angeles?).

All the fear, probably on both sides, seems a development of the original silliness - to me.

Heres an interesting article about the new law, and I dont think either side of the debate can disagree with the points made...

@hawkeye10,
That a national ID card would be more secure than a driver's license seems a specious argument. Why would we need a national ID when we have passports? Sounds like senseless spending . . .utter waste of money.

Of course, everyone knows that the criminal justice students are generally the bottom of the academic pile and that half of them are CJ majors because they want power over others.

Sound of his voice saved him? That does sound more than a tad racist.

That's actually a well-known error in the IT world: EBKAC.

As the USSC said in United States v. Verdugo-Urquidez, 494 U. S. 259, 265 (1990):

" While this textual exegesis is by no means conclusive,
it suggests that "the people" protected by the Fourth Amendment,
and by the First and Second Amendments, and to whom rights
and powers are reserved in the Ninth and Tenth Amendments,
refers to a class of persons
who are part of a national community or who have
otherwise developed sufficient connection with this country to be considered part of that community."

It remains to be seen what the USSC has to say about the Mexican intruders
being part of that "national community" which is protected by the 4th Amendment.

I don 't have much problem with the Mexicans per se,
but if that be racism, "let us make the most of it."

@plainoldme,
It's reality, voice can clarify sometimes who has lived in the u.s. and interacted for a long time, for the intervening officer. Fresno is different from Nogales.

Racist, that's a start, it's more complicated, districtist, I posit.

I think it is all ridiculous. People in the US, well, many, don't seem to get that mexicans love mexico, and like home. They want to do well by home, which is impoverished - well, historically, in a lot of areas, not all, but also, home.

Re coming to the U.S. to do it? Like, duh.

Very likely, when the police heard Ed's voice, thay recognized
that English is his first language. The police probably know
that if u r out in your garden too much on sunny days, u can get darkened.

@plainoldme,
Pom, that's wild talk, even if some fit your description.
Some people in the lower half of the academic pile do well in actual life. I could add, some in the upper don't do so well.

You tend to be like David, your present nemesis, in that you value some creds or numbers so highly.

Maybe some people don't want to go to law school. I never did.
