But, this particular thread was posited as not about all that. It was about civil talk, which could have benefited all of us, however we diverged on opinion.

Why don't she complain as much as you have? Not trying to be mean but she has not complained as long as I can remember and if she did not like some of the posters I am sure that she is smart enough to use the ignore user link which would clear up all post that she does not want to see!

She did complain on this thread, but she is way nicer than I am. You would notice that littlek complains if you read the whole damned thing. If you haven't read her lately, I figure she has dispaired.

We, she, and many of the rest of us to start, hoped for actual conversation.

It's a problem, as when people make assertions, one needs to answer. Sometimes those assertions are bizarre, thus more need to answer.
This becomes a circus.

I think you are missing Osso's point RL - she knows how to ignore assholes, but she doesn't want to ignore people responding to assholes, she just wants them to stop responding to the assholes, thus feeding their assholiness.

Plus what assholes me and Ionus are and what a wonderful thing the Ignore facility is which operates like bouncers do who remove hecklers from the hall during lectures about free speech.

A public debate is exactly that. Ignore is not a bolt-hole for when publicly stated opinions are challenged.

Do you want everybody to be atheists? Using Ignore to avoid answering that question is revealing. As is diverting the discussion to the annoyance of fundies knocking at the door once every blue moon.

But if the definition of asshole is anyone who challenges a public statement then tunnel vision is the function of Ignore and the totalitarian government hiding behind walls and guarded by well bribed goons looms into view and assholes, rats and mice is Gadaffi's preferred assertion, can be crushed because they are officially declared to be assholes.

I know how not to ignore assholes or those responding to assholes and I don't want assholes to stop responding to assholes because the more obvious their assholiness is demonstrable the better. (see above quote).

Perfectly, I thought he was seeking moral justification after the fact. You called him on it, so he laid his fiendishly cunning 'I told you so' trap. That was how it played out in my mind anyway - he actually started the thread a couple of weeks before - maybe because the atheists were being respectful in it he thought he'd poke their hive? Beats me. Snood used to be a happy dood but a couple of times recently rather than turn the other cheek he's beaten people over the head with it.
