The Atheist/Theist unity thread (a Discussion)

Reply Wed 29 Jun, 2016 08:48 am
It seems that very often in religious threads, the Theist and the Atheist set themselves up in an unnecessary enmity with one another. I know I had mentioned this before, but I do think it has an element of truth to it
Quote:
The atheist and the Christian alike, each endeavours to save his brother from the dangers of his belief system.

Snark, ridicule, disdain, ad hominems and passive aggressive digs are quite common in theological discussion, in turn they are also often seen where they are not.
Do we have to have this invisible line down the middle of the forum, God botherers and bible on one side and Heathens on the other? is there a way to increase the degree of civility on A2K? is the hostility just a cause for entertainment? Do our key protagnosts feel persecuted by threads like this? Smile

Disclaimer - For those inclined to good well mannered discussion, these generalisations may not apply

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today,
I wish, I wish he'd go away...

When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn't see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don't you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door...

Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn't there,
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away...

I think you ask some good questions, Smiley. I don't have the answers for them

@Smileyrius,
I commend your attempt to balance alternates, Smiley.
But opposites - Are, exactly, That.
You stopped at 'proposition 3', if I recall?

Now you need to exist, in like stead.
Haven't written you off, yet (Clearly) - But if I've got to re-address this eternally, for your sake, alone - I will be less than attentive in 'future'.
REALLY! For-FRIKKIN-Ever?

Gimme/we (GIMWE) (New word) A break.

I'm sure you do.

Dammit, there I go with the snark again!

But I do think the thread is a good idea, even though the first reply was a failure. Let's see where it goes.

@Smileyrius,
One disservice to unity is the misrepresentation of atheists by theists like when you refer to atheists as having a belief system.

There is no belief system to atheism.

Atheism is a lack of beliefs concerning gods.

It would help the cause of unity to know what the other side actually stands for.

By dictionary definition you are right but in today's society it has taken on a different connotation.

In intellectual, academic and even in media circles, it is taken to mean the throwing off of theological beliefs in light of superior answers from science.

@Leadfoot,
Then what you call it when you have no need and no use for a god?

@Leadfoot,
No it isn't, and you've illustrated my point.

@timur,
Excuse my intrusion.
But I call it 'Meism'.
I am accountable/responsible for my actions.
Scripture has great insights - The bible, qu'ran, kabal, torah, etc - All worthy reads.
And God is within and about them all, yet is described (fully) by none.
I am not an atheist - Nor do I call upon prescription descriptions of primitive belief-systems.

Someone who has no need to address the issue. A true agnostic.
Which pretty much leaves out anyone who bothers to post in any theistic thread.

It's like me and sports threads. I'm not there. I'm agnostic to sports.

Pitiful belittling..

I consider myself a true atheist and I post wherever I feel the need to do.

Theists are usually the proselytizing kind and try to shove their religion down our throats.

You really don't know what you are talking about.

What amazes me is how people project on others their own beliefs and notions.

I'm not as narcissist as yourself..

There's something profound out there we barely understand or are even aware of. Eventually maybe we'll catch on a bit and it will be shown perfectly logical or not to call it "God"

I was not trying to belittle you at all. No more than I was belittling myself for having no need to address sports.
