Not to tip my hand too much, but we have some tools. Plus there's also good ole common sense -- for a lot of these stories, the poster is so addicted to the attention that they just add more and more onto the story. Credibility is strained until, eventually, it breaks.

And the more you guys give credence to the voice then the more credence his voice will have. Ignore is a very useful feature in some cases.

edit --- sorry, jes and I posted at the same time. This was directed at those who felt the need to converse with a troll.

Understood; thanks for the explanation.

It seems to me that any of us can usually get as much attention
as he wants by posting ordinary comments and questions, as we do.
To my mind, it seems odd that anyone woud be interested
in preparing hoaxes; there is no profit in it; waste of time.

oh for the olden days, when the rule followed by civilized folk on the boards was "take what you can use, and leave the rest".......before so many felt the need to place derogatory labels on those who are deemed to be unwanted.

Bit by bit civilization, and civility, degrades...

Ah, but it is the type of attention one craves.
If you're some wretched, isolated soul, online attention might well be the only attention you receive at all. If you can manipulate people into pouring out concern & sympathy with "your" ongoing tales of woe, it might actually feel very nice! And if you're kinda dumb, you might even feel you've been incredibly clever, superior even, by sucking them all in! Wink

@Phantom Menace,
Phantom Menace, I 'd be happy to accept u into our fellowship
if u were reasonably polite, but (so far as I remember)
ALL of your posts have manifested anger, rudely expressed.

My life will be happier without someone else 's hostility infused into it.

In order to avoid the malice that u take pride
in expressing, I 'm putting u on Ignore. Good bye.
