History disproves u, Jack.
Gun control is a Johnny come lately.
Even in ENGLAND, it was traditional and paradigmatic
for a gentleman always to take his revolver with him
the same as his pocketwatch, until shortly after the First World War.

In the State of Vermont, there have never been any gun laws
and it has always been among the very SAFEST states,
according to annual FBI statistics. Around maybe ten years ago,
the State of Alaska repealed ALL of its gun laws, restoring pure gun freedom,
the same as Vermont, with no ill effects.

It has always been the same in Switzerland, with plentiful submachineguns
and fully automatic rifles and near zero crime.

Afganistan is in a state of war propagated by fanatical, suicidal Moslems.

Sarcasm noted.
The answer is a proper shoulder weapon,
in addition to a .44 magnum revolver with hollowpointed slugs.
I doubt that she coud handle a .50 caliber pistol or revolver.

My own preference has been to stay away from the bears altogether
and taking cabs instead of hiking.

That 's a fact.

Another way of putting the general idea
is that I prefer to read of an account of a sweet young folksinger
using her revolver (I disfavor pistols, tho I own some) to successfully
control a predatory emergency
and remaining INTACT,
rather than to read such a story as is the basis of this thread,
which keeps happening all too ofen to hikers or joggers.

He who goes boating shoud take a life preserver;
he who goes hiking shoud take a .44 caliber life preserver.
That 's not a joke.

In some states, if the police catch u in your car not wearing a seatbelt, u get fined.

It shoud be that if the police catch any citizen not wearing a gun, he is fined.

Going around unarmed is negligent, its irresponsible, its reckless.
Students shoud be warned against that in school
the same as thay are warned against drunken driving.

I don't what what it is with gun nuts. All they can think of for solutions to problems is firearms.

So what's the deal with dog nuts? They act as if a dog is the solution to everything. Dog fetish, is what it is.

If I'm being attacked by an animal, everything else being equal, I would much rather have a loaded gun in my hand than a dog at my side.

@Ticomaya,
I note that you still haven't gotten over the professional tendency of lawyers for uninformed speech, so I will educate you. Coyotes shy away from domestic dogs of equal or near equal size. Coyotes don't know if you are carrying a pistol before an attack, so carrying a weapon is not a deterrent to a coyote attack, only a defense while one occurs. They do recognize a predator and stay away from people with large dogs. That comes from personal experience in dealing with and tracking coyotes over the past three decades. Sensible people would rather avoid an attack by a wild animal than fought off one.

btw Tico I don't run around this site like David does i.e., constantly promoting the use and ownership of guns, by promoting dog ownership. So as usual, your attempt at moral equivalence is bullshit simply to make an ad hominum attack. I could return the favor, but you are not worth the time.

Gosh, thanks for "educating" me. Of course, coyotes also shy away from humans without large dogs, too ... but evidently these particular coyotes didn't get that memo. Your assertion that a dog would have prevented this attack is nothing more than conjecture on your part. More than likely since these coyotes were desperate enough to attack a human, they would have attacked the dog as well.

@Ticomaya,
I've seen a pack of coyotes bring down a full grown doe, slightly larger than any dog I've ever seen.

She was most probably wearing an iPod or the like. Even if she'd had a gun, the element of surprise would have been greater. A dog would have warned her.

@Ceili,
The best bet is to have a dog and a gun.

I have hiked most of the Appalachian Trail. I have hiked northern Rockies, California, Colorado and parts of Europe and Asia. I have never been threatened by an animal. I've had bears snoop around our campsite and even rip open our cooler but they have never attacked. Coyotes rarely attack humans. Let's not blame the victim for this one.

definitely a good chance of this.

Guns aren't particularly good early warning systems.

Those things are unreliable. Bears are unpredictable; sometimes a bear will even attack himself.
(Thay have been photographed venting their rage upon themselves.)

It is irresponsible to bet your life on unreliable equipment.
