@sozobe,
The bottom of the balloon was "not breached." He's fine. <exhale>

Seems not 100% certain but pretty close.

@sozobe,
Meaning he was never in it?

@JPB,
Exactly. If he was never in it, he couldn't have fallen from a height, and is fine, but hiding (unless the parents are purposely keeping him out of sight to enhance the drama, which I think the dad at least is capable of. The mom was OK.)

@sozobe,
Well, that's good.

Those kids all look pretty young. I was thinking the brother must have been a lot older. Guess not...

@JPB,
I hope they find him soon and that he's safe.

Gotta go tend to the rest of my day...

@DrewDad,
I don't think the balloon had the weight/lift ratio needed to lift an average 6 year old male, so you would need to explain why you said "I don't think you quite understand the seriousness of what happened".

Well you don't need to explain anything if you don't wanna and I'll get back to playing with my TI-89 Titanium.

@JPB,
Yeah, me too.

Whew!

I'm wondering what repercussions are going to be.

I know he's not actually been found safe yet, seems extremely likely at this point but I won't relax all the way 'til he's been found...

All that public money spent on this. I wonder if the father will be liable for any of it?

I recall them from last year - they are a memorable family

Is there any possibility this may all have been a publicity stunt?

@Chumly,
Personally, I found your attitude flippant at a time when the child was thought to be a) flying out of control at thousands of feet, b) suffocated, or c) fallen from a height.

In fact, I still find it flippant.

To each his own, I suppose, but I'm not sure why you thought we'd be interested in your childhood enthusiasms.

Carry on.

Hmmm... I don't suppose you're talking about this...

@ehBeth,
Yep.

I did sympathize with the mom's attempts to loosen up the overprotective family. I remember kids going down a hill on bikes, and loving it.

I couldn't STAND the dad but I can't remember specific reasons why. I know he had a temper, but there was more to it than that.

@DrewDad,
More like I have the ability to assess volume versus lift versus mass in the context of popular media sensationalism...a skill-set you appear to lack.

Aw crap. The news is bad again.

Evidently there was a box attached to the bottom of the balloon. And the brother is saying that's what the kid climbed into. And the box hasn't been found.

(The balloon had ~ 100 lbs of lift. Kid is 50 lbs.)

The worst possible news, I think.

@edgarblythe,
Yes. A sheriff's deputy says he saw an object fall off of the balloon.

@edgarblythe,
There's a photo taken 35 miles from where the Sheriff's deputy said he saw something fall... it shows a "speck" under the balloon. Not clear if it's meaningful or not yet. It's the main story at this point though.

@sozobe,
I search around every few minutes. I'm really hoping the boy miraculously survived.
