What's with most everybody going with Atlanta over Chicago?

Atlanta's only real test was against New England, and they lost that one. San Fran showed that it's not ready for prime time.

Chicago narrowly lost to Green Bay in the first game of the season, and went on to beat the Steelers in the proceeding game.

Are you all onto some information that I may not be aware of?

What's the scoop?

@InfraBlue,
In my case the choice involves a bit of fan preference, support, and hope. Not all, as I don't see Atlanta at this point as apt to be crushed by Chicago (but possible, possible}, and I do think they can win. My choices vary - most often I go with a combination of research and my evaluation of that with maybe a hunch as the icing, and sometimes I go with research, evaluation, and some wishful thinking.

Thanks to the 21 folks who have picked thus far. I am not nagging JPB, Mysteryman, Imur, the Cowdocs or Maporsche yet. I kind of know their posting patterns.
With regards to Atlanta vs Chicago, 5 of us have the Bears. All 8 of the ESPN experts have the Falcons. I also signed up for an ESPN Fantasy League (but have forgotten to pick for a couple of weeks). According to a graph on the Fantasy home page, 73% of the universe of players have Atlanta vs 27% for Chicago. I don't follow the NFL closely enough to understand why so many folks are dissing the Bear's chances.

It's just a matter of home field advantage...they just don't think Bears travel well.

Sorry, I was making a legitimate post on a topic I follow closely (economics) and you and Jaye had each just posted comments on home foreclosures. I couldn't resist a chance for a two-fer.

Good evening.
Stefan Fatsis talks about sports on NPR. Actually, about the "business" of sports. He was on today's All Thing's Considered.
He wrote an op/ed piece in the NY Times about NFL injuries. I have not seen the article yet, but a suggestion for a title might be "NFL Players = Michael Vick's Fighting Pit Bulls."
He starts with a small survey of ex-NFL players and their health problems when they get in their 40's or 50's. Statistically, too small a sample but evidence of them having issues with memory etc.
He moves on to the fact that trainers/team doctors report to the coaches, general managers and, perhaps, owners. That group wants the player to play.
The player is (often?) the last to be told about the severity of last week's injury.
Fatsis argues for the NFL to set up an independent medical staff to review diagnoses so that, unlike Vick's pit-bulls, players can know what they are risking.
I have no doubt that, even if advised to sit out, the players would opt to play.
Andy/Clubber told me how long the average NFL career lasts. Can't remember what he said. 5 years?

Would I be correct, Spendius, in stating that the roughest sport in the UK is rugby, where folks unencumbered by helmets and other protective body-wear hurl themselves at each other?
Are there professional rugby leagues in the UK where guys can make a living?
That's an honest question from me.
Here in the U.S. thousands of young men go to hundreds of colleges to study and continue to play football they learned about in high school. They study architecture or pre-med, sometimes with scholarships because they are pretty good at football.
But there is no denying that there are college football factories, admitting guys unqualified academically, but they sure can run or pass or block.
Most of them get a worthless college degree and don't make it to the NFL and disappear from the spotlight.
A few make it, but only for a short time. A big bonus for signing, a few big paychecks, and a whole bunch of new "friends" wanting to leech on.
"Put me in, coach. I can still play."
The brass ring on the edge of the merry-go-round gets further out of reach, but the cry goes on: "Put me in, coach. I can still play."

@realjohnboy,
I consider cricket to be the toughest game here. At the top level I mean. Lower down it's more a social activity.

In general all sport is tough and rough.

There are two forms of rugby. Rugby Union and Rugby League. The first is posher. League is working class and northern. In neither is it allowed to tackle a player who is not in possession of the ball. Very few rugby players have front teeth.

Horseracing is pretty tough too. I used to know the British javelin champion and he trained until he spewed up. The training is the hardest part. Rowing is murderous.

It's impossible to deal with your questions in brief.

Like all human activity where there is big money and fame involved there is no room for the faint of heart.

I would say that the toughest place to be in British sport is coming down the hill towards the last three fences in the Cheltenham Gold Cup when there are five or six horses still with a chance. If there's three at the last fence the jockeys take their very lives in their hands.

And there are the temptations of women, booze, drugs and gambling.

But nothing compares to sitting on top of a moon rocket. That's a madness in my opinion.

@InfraBlue,
The Bears D (especially their secondary) has been decimated with injuries. Atlanta has a very potent passing offense and Micheal Turner running the ball. Chicago will score too as Atlanta D isn't that great either, but I expect it to be a high scoring game with Atlanta edging them out late in the 4th quarter... and I'm a Bears fan.

Fans don't expect their team to lose. Rational thought and fans don't mix.

I was talking about this today with Andy (aka Clubber). His argument is that these guys are getting huge, but still agile. And they are protected by a lot of armor on their bodies. They are tanks, slamming into each other.
Andy claims that Joe Montana (now retired after an exceptional career as a QB) said that players should play without facemasks.
