If you look at an atlas of the world, Spendius, the UK is just a little pink dot compared to the U.S.
When I lived (squatted, actually) in London, I could go to Devon or Glasgow and never be far from home. Even by thumb, which was my mode of travel.
But when I was younger and stuck out my thumb in Virginia heading for California: that was a road thing. 3,000 miles through plains, deserts and mountains.
A lot of American literature makes reference to the "road."
Baseball uses the notion of "road trips" frequently. A team will finish a stand at home and then will go on a week or so tour of other cities.
Calling it an "away from home" stint would sound pretty silly.
