@farmerman,
I voted for Bill Clinton-- twice. And I would have voted for Gary Hart, if I had the chance (although his sin was stupidity more than lust).

You didn't consider stupidity to be an undesirable trait in a candidate?

@High Seas,
High Seas, you already know I think of Berlusconi as a buffoon with genuine fangs. (I don't care if you met him and he was nice.) I know less about Albany and its machinations. but am paying attention. I guess I see the analogy.

@dyslexia,

This affair would enhance Sanford's resume if he was a democrat.

At least one state lawmaker called for his resignation. As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for "moral legitimacy."

@H2O MAN,
As it should.

I think, as Panzade points out, it is the hypocrisy that matters.

Why should this story matter?

Adultery has absolutely nothing to do with your ability to govern.

But abandoning your post without informing your staff, family or the chain of command is cause for concern.

@Bi-Polar Bear,
Why would diddling little boys hurt the prospects of a cardinal who wants to be Pope?

@Setanta,
Not much through history, but maybe now, what with rather advanced media. On the other hand, I don't know what effect media has on the college of cardinals. Some, I'll guess, but how much?

It won't be easy
You'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love
After ll that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see
Is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressd up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you

I had to let it happen
I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window
Staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it too

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

And as for fortune and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world
They were all I desired
They are illusions
They're not the solutions
They promise to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me

Don't cry for me Argentina

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

Have I said to much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do
Is look at me to know
That every word is true

@dyslexia,
What's WITH these stories?

The obvious disappearance...the dramatic re-entry...the clamour of grande guignol apology amd lamentation and self-abasement? Or the toe-tapping in loos?

Why can't American right wing politicians have sane, normal affairs like everyone else? Privately.

I know conservative party Brit politicians have a penchant for leather, erotic self-hangings, feathers, women's underwear and high heels, and being caught in flagrante delicte (sp?) but WHAT is the psychology of this?

My understanding is that he told his staff he was hiking (I assume there was a chain of command). All they needed to know was that he was taking a break and couldn't be reached... nothing else is their business.

It sounds like his wife knew about the affair and told him she didn't want him around. Again... as long as he left... nothing else matters.

I don't see any reason-- other than the hypocrisy is his public life-- that any of this should matter.

He's the GOVERNOR. He needs to be reachable, in case of a state emergency. Dropping out of site like that is the epitome of I-don't-give-a-****. What if one of his boys got sick? Had an accident? Parents need to be reachable. Off with his girlfriend on Father's Day , leaving four young boys back home, says alot more about what kind of man he is than anything else.

This is a weird dude-
Quote:
During Sanford's first gubernatorial campaign in 2002, an 8-year-old African-American girl wandered onto a Sanford family property on Lady's Island and drowned. A source close to the governor said she fell into a "retaining pond." Her family's lawyer, Manning Smith, called it a "pit." Other sources claim that Sanford, who owned a hydraulic excavator at the time, digs holes on his property to unwind.

@panzade,
I think that his abandoment of his post should be countered with an impeachment. The legislators in Illinois did not lose anything by pressing for an impeachment of Blagojevich.

You make is sound as if this were no big deal. This is the party who scourges their opponents for their immorality. This is the party which relies upon the right wing christian vote, garnered by an alleged adherence to moral rectitude. This is the party which attempted to remove a president from office for his sexual peccadillos. Hypocrisy in public life is a big deal from the party which makes moral rectitude their alleged calling card.
