Hardly uninformed. Name another country where people have the right to carry guns.

Now, if you equate freedom with the right to bear arms, what can I say?
I thought this right was, nowadays, detrimental to freedom..

No; not at all. It symbolizes the power that we used
to overthrow government, from which our freedom derove.

Those who succeeded in that overthrow, the Founders of this Republic
knew that it might become necessary again.

Possession of guns symbolizes supremacy of the individual citizen
over his hireling: government.

"Guns: how much longer will it take ...."

I wonder how much longer it will take before
we invent handguns like Capt. Kirk 's faser:
it is (relatively) silent and it makes the target disappear,
so u don 't have an ugly bloody thing lying on your floor.
Thay r nice and compact, too; lightweight.

Just use it on a burglar, go back to bed and return to sleep.
No fuss

Nope. The right to carry guns for self defense will always be an essential component of freedom.

Just curious, do you really think... with all your guns'n'stuff, you could take the American government? Seriously.
Didn't Ruby Ridge teach anybody anything??
I know some people have the bomb shelter and guns up the whazoo, but I find this idea hilarious.
Say it really did happen. The American people reached the point of no return and they revolted. What that would take I'm not sure..after Bush and all. But say, just for shits and giggles, your government went after your guns. Changed your precious amendment and decided to ban guns and a riot ensued on Main Street. What's next? I'm assuming like all good little soldiers you have a contingency plan in place, yes.
How would this supposed revolution be started? Who would lead you? Would urban and rural communities unite or separate? Would the boundaries be divided amoungst north and south. Who's your enemy? Who would you kill first? Once you'd blown your wad what then?
I'd love to hear the plans?
Any takers????

Yes. Seriously.

The American government uses it's soldiers to enforce power. If the people were to rise up against the government those soldiers would be fighting their neighbors and their brothers. Which would severely limit their desire.

Additionally, the government wouldn't likely use it's most potent weapons (nuclear) nor it's non-nuke bombs because they'd be destroying their own infrastructure.

300 million guns in the USA, 360 million people. Our government wouldn't stand a chance.

@djjd62,
LOL. That would make some great TV. Maybe it could happen during the summer when all the good shows are off air.

Really though, if enough of the population were so inclined, I don't think it's unrealistic to think that they could over throw the government.

I do wonder how many people it would take to do something like that.

Would 500k be enough? 1 million? 30 million?

@Ceili,
It really just depends on what happens leading up to the supposed overthrowing and how big the opposition to the government is. If 150 million people end up wanting to overthrow the government, well, it would likely be very well organized. If it's a group of 1000 people spread across the country, well, probably less organized.

I wish Germans had guns when Hitler was taking over power in Germany.

@maporsche,
it always seemed to me, that the prevailing attitude at the beginning of hitlers rise to power in germany was supportive, things were tough and he gave them scapegoats and hope for a better future

by the time the populace was turning against him, things were already in decline

One of the points involved
is that gun control can only exist by an act of USURPATION of power.
That is very anti-freedom.
If government can usurp the power that it wants,
then freedom of the citizens is not safe,
bearing in mind that personal freedom and the domestic power
of government are INVERSELY PROPORTIONATE.

Repressionists want to remove guns, saying they are sometimes used to facilitate crime.
They fail to understand that the actual weapon is the HUMAN MIND,
whose cleverness has not been controlled nor restrained (even in prison).
This mind expresses itself perseveringly, into the manifestation of
its felt needs or desires, and it has FOREVER to do the job that it selects
(e.g., the art of the gunsmith/gun merchant). Prohibition is futile.
