saw the chopper fly away, and Cheneys car went to McLean. We are relatively safe for an undetermined period.

@The Pentacle Queen,
Feels like the other 43 times we had an orderly transfer of power.

Nothing out of the ordinary.

I don't think words by any of us (save perhaps Joe Nation) could possibly accurately describe.

@farmerman,
That would also be a historic event that most people thought would never happen.

In my head there's a massive post-WWII-caliber parade with elephants and marching bands and newsboys waving papers bearing the massive headline, "Later, Bitch!"

@edgarblythe,
I'm 58..and followed politcs since perhaps Kennedy-Nixon in 1960. As 5th- graders we sent letters to both candidates and got replies back. In my life I've never been happier to see a President go quietly into that dark night. I pray for very few things, but my prayer is that the world recover from the damage his 2 terms has cost this country and the world at large.

When I saw that helicopter take off I thought: Now I know how the Russians felt when Stalin died.

I know I am supposed to be in awe at the historical side of seeing Obama elected...

but Im not.

Im sad. Honestly.

Im sad that we as a nation were represented by someone like bush for 8 years. That we KNEW someone had cheated to keep him in office.. and all we did was stay in our homes, bitch over dinner to our family about it.. and held our heads down and did nothing.

Now, here comes another politician..i want high hopes for .. but dont have them.. Why? Because of the things the last one could pull off.

Im glad that as an american , I dont have to have G.W as the face of the country I live in. And that the rest of the world can stop judging us as a whole under the banner of George.. and can start paying attention to what we really want. But I dont know that as a nation WE KNOW what we want yet. We are too blinded by a black man in office.

is he going to be a good president?

I hope so.

@Steve 41oo,
It's a half-hearted attempt at the quote from a section of the Dylan Thomas poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night"

2nd sentence from the end:
"...Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
