I am new as well. It does seem like the members of this board are not very helpful and rather quick on the attack.

@bruce kolstad,
Don't let that stop either of you from posting your thoughts. Just bare your teeth when it's needed. Wink

welcome to both of you. I love to help in honest requests. My only limitation to helping is that I will never supply answers to homewrok questions . Using a shortcut such as a bulletin board doesnt supply astudent with the tools to continue learning more difficult subjects.

However, I love to answer questions about gardening, cooking, and art. Im often wrong but, by posing an answer thats wrong, I soon find out what the right one was.
You must learn to develop a thicker skin , nobody is really being consciously brutal , many of us just have werid senses of humor.
I always picture the target of my posts as someone with a grin on their face.

I'm prolly not the best, and Certainly not an official, spokesmodel...

This site is under construction (clever sign here)

We are all adjusting, and trusting, that great things are on the horizon.

(hang around for a bit, and welcome to A2K)

I know of the wolves, but mostly they are silly no nothings...

@islandgirl,
I suppose this board is like most places ... you will find friendly and helpful posters, and you will find cranky and irritating posters (no, not you, dys).

But thicker skin, as FM suggests, never hurts.

@islandgirl,
It is hard to figure out. We can all, or, well, most of us, can get vehement at some point. Some of the people who post fiercely against each other have gotten to be friends because of a certain gained respect over time - and that's sometimes hard to tell. Some cushion what they think with niceties, some are clear without niceties as a cushion; some are insulting in an almost jovial way, some in an ugly or near ugly way, and some are insulting as if getting an insult fix for the day. Some key in on proper debate, and some have no idea of how to debate. Just about none of us who talk here over time have a perfect record.

I appreciate proper debate but am not good at it - part of my interest in a2k is to learn how to argue. I also modify my views once in a while because of someone's lucid comment here. It will seem that no one moves in their stances, but some do. Blasting folks is not the best way to be convincing, so the insult thing is pretty limited in effectiveness.

@islandgirl,
I guess you can call me a Dr Jekyl and My Hyde. I'm pretty helpful with travel, and have posted several travelogues with pictures of my trips that seems to attract many viewers. I have also organized a2k meets in San Francisco and Austin, and have attended meetings in Chicago, London, Hawaii, and Lippstadt, Germany.

Even though we may disagree on politics and religion, we get along fine face-to-face. We just had visitors from England, and we were able to show them around Northern California for a few days. They also traveled to Las Vegas and some national parks during their three week stay.

I contribute in the finance forums, and pretty active in the politics, religion, and science threads. That's where one has to have a rather thick skin if they're willing to hash out differences of opinion and position that can become rather heated.

The nice thing about a2k is that we have participants from all over the world, and all across the US. We have professionals of many fields, and some of us with some experience in labor and management.

Pull up a chair, and enjoy yourself. Take most of your participation as part of your education and entertainment; it'll satisfy both.

@islandgirl,
If you get out of the political threads, you have a lot more fun.

hey gal, i helped you right out of the chute on your question on solar panels, but you ought to recognize that most akers have been involved in scores if not hundreds of heated arguments over the past six years since the site went up in October of 2002 and for many of us for at least two years before as Abuzzards from the New York Times site called Abuzz from which many of us fled after it folded in September of 2003.

btw a kuvasz is capable of kicking a wolf's ass and they have been used used for predator control against them for thousands of years.

@islandgirl,
The wolves all hang around the political threads. Go to some of the more sedate topics and you'll find a number of us friendly doggies cavorting around. Some of the people on this forum are quite knowledgeable in their own fields. We have a large number of professionals from many fields posting here regularly. And don't forget, as Kuvasz has already pointed out, a lot of us have known each other for seven or eight years or more. In a situation like that, old animosities crop up from time to time, not to even mention some of the strong friendships which have been made.

Welcome to the loony bin. Try to keep off the grass, don't feed the wild animals (especially the wolves) and have a blast!
