wing nut

Short for "a right-wing nut". Popularized in blogs and throughout the Internet. Used to refer to those who unquestioningly accept and repeat right-wing propaganda no matter how outrageous or unbelieveable.

As opposed to normal conservatives who have relatively independent minds--those few that remain.

lmao The Urban Dictionary is some sort of "official" reference now? Who knew?

Maybe you should have scrolled doen a bit further in their listing of definitions though.

Wing Nut

Ideological extremist from either side of the political spectrum who unquestioningly repeats any and all propaganda and/or conspiracy theories propagated by their side of the political spectrum, no matter how unlikely.

So are you saying that even though there is more then one definition, the only one that counts is yours?

Just stop MM. Roxxxanne has already told both Nimh and Fishin' they have no political acumen and do not, therfore, know from which they speak. If that wasn't enough to tell you that you are dealing a complete dolt then I have no idea what would.

I have seen the word used thousand of times since I have been in the net in the last tne years and I have never seen it used to describe anyone but a right-wing nut. Anyone who has read as many blogs as I have over the years would know that I am right.

I will put up thousand dollars to anyone who wants to wager that I can prove that the word is used to describe right-wing nuts almost exclusively.

Interesting ....

Now if google returns 4,540 hits for the search "liberal wingnut," ...

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/6426/6740236125639370fv3.jpg

... but only 1,620 hits for the search, "conservative wingnut," ...

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/8230/6740236125786885zv5.jpg

does that satisfy your definition of the term, "almost exclusively"?

But people don't usually say "Liberal wing nut" OR "conservative wing nut"-- "wingnut" stems from the rightwing and/or leftwing part of the phrase...It doesn't really make sense the other way Laughing I tried it with leftwing nut and rightwing nut and got 250,000 hits and 500,000 hits, respectively...

Oh, I'm not arguing that part, I think it gets used both ways, and I don't have any idea which came first.

I just thought it was funny to search for it using phrases that completely miss the pun part of the expression (I only even thought about it because I was surprised at the low # of hits).

Wing nut is a term that originated to describe extremities of the "right wing". It was an abbreviation of "right wing nut" (contrast to "looney left") and though its abbreviation makes sense to use for any political zealot the term it is abbreviating clearly doesn't.

Using Google totals without understanding what they represent is a really dumb way of proving things. Your selection of terms has more to do with your results than real differences in use.

E.g. here are selections in diametric opposition to your conclusions.

"right wingnut" (in quotes) - 23,700
"left wingnut" (in quotes) - 5,640

"left wing nut" (in quotes) - 90,000
"right wing nut" (in quotes) - 243,000

wingnut politics right - 844,000
wingnut politics left - 753,000

Feh! People in the Army, Navy and Marine Corp have been referring to Air Force folks as "Wing nuts" for decades. It easily pre-dates any political references. Wink

I was pointing out that her reliance on theUrban Dictionary for "proof" is meaningless - especially when her own reference contradicts her claim.

There's just one new name: Butrflynet. I still just caught that post! How could I have forgotten her!

But otherwise, lots of subtle changes.. <makes finicky gesture with index fingers>
