All this said, there is still a common phrase in Spanish: "Poner una pica en Flandes" (To nail a stake in Flanders), and it means to crown a difficult enterprise, to achieve something overcoming severe difficulties.
That's revealing and interesting about the common Spanish phrase--and given the 80+ year war they fought with the Dutch, understandable.
Recently, we've had come conservative pundits come here to speak
ex cathedra on the topics of history, ethnology and political science, and i've learned things i had never known in 50 years of reading history. For example, did you know that all people with straight hair are either descended from Mediterranean peoples or Amerindians? Did you know that the Nazis were true socialists, and therefore are exemplary of the evils of the left?
There is so much to learn at this site.
