Fifteen years ago when I was a (semi-)player in the newspaper business, Editor & Publisher was the Bible. Every small, medium, and large newspaper's editor and publisher and advertising director and circulation manager and production manager and their assistants read it.

I don't know if it still carries that kind of clout in the industry today, but I will suggest that if you agree with what Greg Mitchell writes below, then forward a copy and the link to in a LTTE to your local paper, along with your own comments.

We may still have a little time left to wake the lapdog up and remind him that he's a watchdog:

Quote:
Some time in the next two weeks, David Kay, head of the Iraqi Survey Group, is expected to finally release a crucial report on his findings so far in his search for weapons of destruction.

"I am confident that when people see what David Kay puts forward they will see that there was no question that such weapons exist, existed, and so did the programs to develop more," Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday. "We did not try to hype it or blow it out of proportion."

Since no weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) have been found in Iraq, close observers now report that Kay is likely to drop on the media a massive weapon of his own: hundreds or thousands of pages of summaries and documents purporting to prove that Saddam Hussein had WMDs recently (and hid them) and/or had numerous WMD programs underway that we succeeded in pre-empting.

In the parlance once used by Howell Raines, Kay thereby will "flood the zone" and hope the press portrays what may be largely assertion -- not fact -- as compelling proof. Would the media possibly fall for this? There are disturbing indications that they would.

Last month, one of the most important stories of 2003 appeared, and got significant play in a number of major newspapers -- but not nearly enough. There's still time for the rest to catch up and, in most cases, honestly admit that they promoted one of the most lethal rush-to-judgements of the modern journalistic era -- and vow to do better in the future, starting with the Kay case.

The August report was written by Charles J. Hanley, special correspondent for the Associated Press, who shared a Pulitzer Prize in 2000. It utterly demolishes Powell's much-lauded Feb. 5 presentation to the United Nations on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, and the need to go to war to destroy them. (Excerpts from Hanley's story appear here and his entire 2500-word piece can be read at Philly.com.)

Will the Press Roll Over Again on Kay's WMD Report?

If we can offer a reward for the capture (dead or alive) of Iraqi war criminals ..... why not money for WMD's?

I am very much afraid that David Kay uses Howell Raines as a "reference" in the paragraph on DAvid Kay's report. Howell Raines has been completely discredited in the newspaper business because of his use of incompetent people hired under the aegis of "political correctness"

I am afraid that P. Diddie does not have faith in our Press Corps.

Certainly, worthies such as Molly Ovens, Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman and Al Franken won't allow anyone like Kay pull the wool over their eyes.

No sir!!!!

I am sorry. I don't understand.
What does "privat" mean?

... ... ...

Otherwise I can use other languages too if it is permissible.

Your guess was correct: 'privat' means 'private' - and it actually was an typo.

You really should be glad about your language skills (I think, your knowledge of English is extraordinary superb!) and about your abilities to avoid typos.
Congratulations!

Well, since you don't speak German, I could offer just Latin and French additionally from my side.

See, there are these people who want you and I to die. They used to plan how to kill us here, but now they've been drawn to Afghanistan and Iraq. They are too busy fighting on their own turf to formulate ways to kill us here.

Dear Sofia,

I've seen you repeat this line of argument several times now in different threads. It is a good thing that Al-Qaeda militants are flowing into Iraq and Afghanistan, because then at least they’ll all be there, and it'll be all the easier to strike them down - far from the US.

I have to admit, I don’t see it – I mean, I don’t see the case you’re making.

First off, as Pdiddie already pointed out on another thread, these last two months alone, there were two terrorist bomb attacks - in Indonesia. Other recent attacks were as far afield as Saudi-Arabia, Morocco, the Phillipines, Pakistan. Terrorism has neither gone dormant, nor been bundled into Iraqi or Afghan territory – at least, there’s no evidence for that. To point to the 'proof' that 9/11 hasn’t been followed up on American soil is kind of gratuitous – there was no attack there before 9/11 either, and that didn’t mean Al-Qaeda was prostrate then, either. The spate of attacks, that seem to quicken rather than slow down, in various places around the world at least would suggest the opposite.

Al-Qaeda and other such groups are recruiting from the Philipines to Sudan, from Bali to London. Do you think all such recruits are automatically forwarded to Basra Port by Osama c.s.? I don’t see the logic – they’re smart people, they can come up with the same thoughts as you or me, why would they put all their eggs in one basket? They seem to have a tradition of installing "sleepers" around the globe.

In the meantime, the US occupation of Iraq has opened up a whole new recruiting ground for them, that was practically closed to them altogether, before – and even the various insults and incidents that by nature go with a military occupation alone, will ensure a steady, additional inflow there.

EDIT
Oh by the way, I realise it might look a little strange, just falling into this thread with a very specific reference to what already must be an old post again ... I just happened to be walking on the street, remembering your posts, and thinking about them - so when I came home, I posted! :-)

And that's the REAL problem, folks. By going into Iraq and handling the post-invasion situation badly, we have not only created new breeding ground and rationale for terrorism, but we have forfeited much of the good will of our erstwhile allies.

Ah, and we have yet to know the full size of the iceberg, the part we can't see: we have yet to know what else the administration has lied to us about (and to the rest of the world).

Gee, thank goodness at least our economy is in such good shape, we can have confidence in our intelligence gathering and security measures, and that we have such solid, reliable medical care and insurance...

With all this money being spent, does anyone have the odds on who will win the war, Georgie or Osama?

Georgie will be the short-term loser, but the American People will be the long-term loser. Osama's recruitment campaign has a new impetus thanks to Georgie. It'll be up to the world community to work on that one; the US will be too poor and deflated to be effective on the "war on terrorism." Neither will be the winner; the whole world have lost it's innocence and security forever.

Firsta we gatta .... oops
First we have to figure out what the war is all about .... Why, of all the places in the world that could be trouble, did Georgie decide on Iraq? What was he after?
Hell, Mexico has oil, is a lot closer and it is not totally inconcievable that at some point in the distant future they could develop some kind of weapons system.
I say we preempt Mexico now before any lives are lost.
