Okay, this thread is getting way too sensual. It's beginning to read like William S. Burroughs.
Burroughs could only wish he had our class and wit. We put Naked Lunch to shame . . .
And just what did William burrow into?
Heroin addiction and unsafe sex . . .
He has said it so many times in televised speeches that even I'm tired of hearing it.
The protesters, if they pay any attention to his speeches, had to have heard it, too.
In his own Roadmap, he designed it to lead to a creation of Palestinian state.
People say whatever comes to mind, regardless of the facts, when they oppose, but don't really know why.
Odd, but I understand a bit of it. Bush really made me happy by bodly declaring it a goal of the US to setup a Palestinian state. Other US presidents have said so in the past but precedents were set this time in the UN and elsewhere (even Sharon, who I am suspicious of has made me happy with his own precedents).
But at the same time I understand the trepidation by Muslims. For all the talk nothing has materialized that looks promising yet, and this is coupled by the prevalent notion that Sharon and Bush are among the least-favorable-to-Muslims leaders that there are.
Whether that perception is justified or not is one thing, but I do think it's understandable.
Despite Bush's proclamations on Palestine (that I am willing to believe are well intentioned) the Muslim world has had no good news (by their reasoning) recently and it's no surprise to me that they think Bush is against them.
A Palestinian state will be unfeasible as long as the Jewish settlements keep growing in number and a big fence is being built across the planned Palestinian state to shield them.
President Bush has called for a stop to the expansion of settlements, but has thus far failed to call Sharon on it or condemn it in anything as harsh terms as he condemns ways in which Palestinians undermine the Roadmap timetable.
Talking perceptions - as long as the Bush administration is seen to be letting Sharon get away with transgressions of Roadmap plans in ways he would never let Arafat do so, he will be seen as "uninterested" in the creation of a Palestinian state, regardless what his formal position on the matter is.
Talking linguistics I guess it is well possible for someone not to reject - even to formally approve of something, but still be uninterested about it actually coming about.
Yep, thing is, both Sharon and Bush, thorugh their words (which in politics are actions even more so than they are in life), have furthered the goal of the Palestinian state. Sharon has yelled down party members calling it a fait accompli and both have set precendents that make the ultimate denial of a state very hard.
Bush also put a timetable on it, something that would be stupid to do if it's a hoax.
So while I agree that Bush and Sharon's actions (mostly Sharon, Bush doesn't have the type of political capital to really pressure Sharon yet) do much more to delay a settlement than to reach it I do think they've made moves that the average Arab intellectual recognizes, even if the street doesn't.
But yeah, the encouraging moves by Sharon and Bush haven't translated into any actual progress (except for getting those precendents in).
I am so jealous not to be the object of Kara s approbation.
It's quite possible that Sharon's and Bush's gestures towards Palestine are in fact intended to bolster opposition towards a Palestianian state among their core supporters -- the Right in Israel, and the Christian Right in the US.
