Poke at the issues and not at each other, and you'll have no problem. Of course then, that's precisely the problem. Rolling Eyes

Timber: I've seen that NY Times "quote" before but I can't find it anywhere with the date of publication, do you have it?

I'm afraid I don't have a link that works for either the NYT or the Globe articles; both have been relegated to "Purchase-to-see" archiving.

European aid to Iraq should be conditional on Iraq selling oil in euros. Iran is already thinking about it. Russia can have it both ways. If OPEC switched to euros as well... Cool

Thanks for article from New Republic Hobit

Well, see that's just the thing. I have a NYT archive membership and I can't find that quote, it just keeps showing up in links from someone named BillBoyd or BillyG, the name changes. It starts to look to me like a 'made up', like one of those sweet sappy paragraphs attributed to Robin Williams or George Carlin one finds drifting on the net.
And both "quotes", I hadn't seen the Globe reference before, beg the question : Where the heck was he? Not that he didn't make up the days, there are some suddenly well attended months in 1973, but where was he at the times that he did miss?

This one looks like it:

Quote:
THE 2000 CAMPAIGN: MILITARY SERVICE; Bush's Guard Attendance Is Questioned and Defended

By JO THOMAS (NYT) 657 words
Late Edition - Final , Section A , Page 27 , Column 5

ABSTRACT - Democratic senators Daniel K Inouye and Bob Kerrey call on Gov George W Bush to release full military record to clear up doubts raised by Boston Globe about whether he reported for required drills while member of Air National Guard in 1972 and 1973; review by New York Times shows concerns may be unfounded;

Just do a search on "Turnipseed" (the name of the colonel mentioned in the article), and you'll find it. (To get the most specific search results it's always best to use rarely-used words from the article you're looking for).

Illuminating, watching Rummy discuss the memo with journalists.
It was a note to a few decision-makers-- it didn't contain any classified info--and calling it a leak is overdone.

He wasn't bothered someone gave it out unauthorized...and why should he be? He was urging people to think outside the box. The media keeps trying to act as though this was some insideous plot.

It seems to show Rummy simply doing his job.

Reporters kept alluding to their misconception--"But the administration is always painting such a rosy picture of Iraq... Doesn't thins belie that perception?" I don't know how anyone could say the admin has painted a rosy picture. They just share the positive with the negative--while the press only focuses on the negative. IMO.

Sofia, i don't think i can agree with your statement that the administration shares the positive with the negative. For more than a generation, all administrations, of both parties, have used spin doctors. Nobody in that position, Dem or Rep, wants to admit to any failure--the opposition is out there ready to pounce as it is.

Please note, this statement is not a case of Bush-bashing, just to pull the charge before someone tries to explode it on me.

Brain drain -- result of having a young puppy in the house. Where in the past 24 hours did I read the wonderfully funny account of Donald Evans' "flight" with "GW"? Was it in the NYRB? Was it in these pages? Bush scared to death, incompetent, on his last flight? Does anyone who's seen the original docs still think he did his job with the National Guard?

And how about Clinton's coup re drugs-for-Aids prices?

Credit goes to Clinton for doing that positive drug deal. Another notch in his legacy revision tour.

Doesn't it work cool once one's finally started doing the right thing?

The New York Times did, apparently ... (see link above)

(haven't read up on any of it myself)

Setanta, you ignorant slut--
(teehee)
They report on deaths, fighting, explosions, the long slog, political factions... What negatives have they omitted?

If you expect them to come out with an overview, saying, "Hey, we don't think this is going to work..."

Sofia, you scabrous intellectual leech:

(It is kinda fun, when it's not real)

I know the news media report these things, and if the administration fesses up, it's only natural. Were there no other sources, i doubt we'd get much from the spin boys--their job deals with putting a positive spin on what they can't bury. That was my point, and it's a non-partisan, blanket condemnation of the spin policy in action in any administration.
