The School of Belle Knox-Duke Porn Star

Today’s moral lesson involves the 18-year-old Duke University freshman who has revealed that she is moonlighting in pornography movies to pay her outsized $60,000-a-year tuition at Duke.

Miriam Weeks, aka “Belle Knox,” revealed her secret identity to her date on the way to a party a month or so ago and was astounded to find that within an hour everybody at the party knew it. Apparently in the age of Twitter and Facebook, there are still people who think that word doesn’t get around.

However, that doesn’t mean she is embarrassed about it. After becoming a campus sensation and having word leak to the outer world, Weeks defiantly defended herself in a lengthy tract on xoJane, a feminist website that features stories such as “Trust No One: Online Dating” and “It Happened to Me: I Found My Boyfriend’s Child Pornography.”

Quote:
“Why does the thought of a woman having sexual experiences scare us to much? The answer is simple. Patriarchy fears female sexuality.
It terrifies us to even fathom that a woman could take ownership of her body. We deem to keep women in a place where they are subjected to male sexuality.… The threat I pose to patriarchy is enormous.”

What do you think?

It shouldn't matter what I think. She found ways to justify her actions, so what difference should it make if I object to them. I can't stand this society where others beliefs get to dictate how others should behave. It goes to show that nudity and porn is still under the oppression of a christian mindset who gets to dictate how others should view it. This shouldn't even be a story. It shouldn't be any big deal.

If you don't like porn or nudity, then don't subject yourself to it, avoid it.
Doesn't give you the right to shame or try to victimize a person who decides to partake.

I would not doubt if angry christians try to get her expelled from that school.

It goes without saying.

If you don't like drug use, then don't use drugs yourself. You shouldn't have the right to tell others they can't. Leave it up to them to decide.

If you don't like abortion, then don't get one yourself. You shouldn't have the right to tell others they can't. Leave it up to them to decide.

If you don't like prostitution then don't partake in it. You shouldn't have the right to tell others they can't. Leave it up to them to decide.

If you personally think something is wrong, then you don't do it. You shouldn't have the right to dictate your views of right and wrong onto others. Leave it up to them to decide. Mind your own business.

This shouldn't even be news worthy.

@panzade,
The most shocking thing to me is the tuition fee.

The rest of the story seems comparatively unimportant as it simply follows the obscenity of that tuition rate.

@panzade,
I think this should be a non-story. And I think this young woman is brilliant at self-promotion. This 'accidental leak' got her national attention and netted her tens of thousands of dollars if not more.

If only there were a market for naked 40-something computer geeks.

Who the **** are you to judge anybody else's life and what they need to do to pay for a $60,oo0/year education? How many banksters have you preached on? For shame.

Thank you for your unerring ability to put it into real perspective.

@maxdancona,
We may disagree as to why, but we at least agree that this should stop being a story.

But, of course, as you told me the other day, the American standard of living hasn't gotten worse under Obama, even though tuitions are often now beyond any normal person's ability to pay.

@Brandon9000,
So the US standard of living is clearly creeping downward. We can argue whether that is Obama's fault or not, but using private college tuition as the metric is not going to show it. Here is Harvard's tuition and fees price for a few decades. Under the current administration, Harvard has been a bit restrained compared to previous times. Harvard has also increased grants and loans during this period distorting the numbers further. It's all pretty bogus. I graduated from a private school but wouldn't even consider suggesting it for my children due to the outrageous fees they charge today.

2014 - 43,938 Tuition and Fees. 4.4% Annual Increase since 2010.
2010 - $37,012 Tuition and Fees. 2.3% Annual Increase
2009 - $36,173 Tuition and Fees. 3.4% Annual Increase
2008 - $34,998 Tuition and Fees. 3.8% Annual Increase
2007 - $33,709 Tuition and Fees. 5% Annual Increase
2006 - $32,097 Tuition and Fees. 4.8% Annual Increase
2005 - $30,620 Tuition and Fees. 5.4% Annual Increase
2004 - $29,060 Tuition and Fees. 5.9% Annual Increase
2003 - $27,448 Tuition and Fees. 5.5% Annual Increase
2002 - $26,019 Tuition and Fees. 3.5% Annual Increase
2001 - $25,128 Tuition and Fees. 3% Annual Increase
2000 - $24,407 Tuition and Fees. 10.8% Annual Increase
1999 - $22,028 Tuition and Fees. 3.6% Annual Increase
1998 - $21,266 Tuition and Fees. 4.1% Annual Increase
1997 - $20,424 Tuition and Fees. 4.9% Annual Increase
1996 - $19,472 Tuition and Fees. 5.3% Annual Increase
1995 - $18,485 Tuition and Fees. 5.8% Annual Increase
1994 - $17,470 Tuition and Fees. 6.2% Annual Increase
1993 - $16,454 Tuition and Fees. 6.8% Annual Increase
1992 - $15,410 Tuition and Fees. 6.6% Annual Increase
1991 - $14,450 Tuition and Fees. 6.7% Annual Increase
1990 - $13,545 Tuition and Fees. 6.5% Annual Increase
1989 - $12,715 Tuition and Fees. 5.8% Annual Increase
1988 - $12,015 Tuition and Fees. 5.5% Annual Increase
1987 - $11,390 Tuition and Fees.

@Lordyaswas,
Lordy, I figured out my mistake. I didn't attribute the article properly and made it seem as if I was passing judgement.

As I remember our exchange I argued that income inequality had grown in the last 20 years and it shouldn't be laid at Obama's door-step.
You argued that the quality of life(skyrocketing tuition fees) were the fault of our President.

You're too courteous, Pan. I trust he will be as gracious with an apology for jumping down somebody's throat rather than being civil.

He's been in the White House for six years. The standard of living is low by comparison with earlier in my life. A house, a good college education, and many other things are receding beyond the grasp of ordinary people. Income disparity between the top 1% and the rest of the country seems worse. I suspect that underemployment is very bad. How long does the guy have to be in office before he takes responsibility for something that's happened while he's in office? Is he a helpless spectator or something?

@Brandon9000,
I don't have the energy to debate you about Obama; all I can say is: just two more years and you'll be rid of him and you'll be able to blame some other Democrat president.

However, I'm disappointed that other a2kers didn't find this subject timely and interesting as I did. One never knows.

Hopefully it'll settle down in the silt that is the a2k forgotten subjects layer.

As is so often the case with Brandon, he states his cherished and bigoted opinions as though they were facts. I have not been able to get "postable" images from the Wikipedia article, but i urge everyone who is interested in this subject to look at Standard of Living in the United States.

In particular, the bar graph shows that as of 2007, Americans have the highest proportion of disposable income of any nation on earth. As always, Brandon is more interested in his own, personal political hysteria than in facts and evidence.

@Setanta,
It's aggravating to argue with a scientific mind that won't hold up his political biases to scrutiny.

Brandon is attempting to suggest that Mr. Obama is responsible for the standard of living over the last six years, while ignoring that the junk bond and unsecured mortgage bond collapses as well as the bail-outs took place in 2007, when his hero, Baby Bush, was in office. No surprise there.

I never discussed how we compare to other countries. I talked about how we compare to ourselves in the past. My assertion is that the answer is "very poorly," and I have given specific examples. If you feel like it, please address that.
