Americans don't vote for straight talkers. Have you seen the poll numbers of Kucinic and Paul, the only straight talkers in the primary debates?

Yeah. I have.

Those two interest me most, but I'm off of Paul re the UN.

Well, hell, I'd like to see a grid of what all of the candidates think about this and that.

OnTheIssues.org is not a grid, but it comes close. Have you tried it?

i like hillary better than any of them. sorry.

To answer your "Do you get funny feelings about politicians" question, yes. And I get real funny feelings about Hilary Clinton. But I can't quite say I'm as "gut" about all this as you are. I think my feelings are based in observable and quantifiable things. Some of my queasiness about her is based on her conniving and calculating - the shameless way she puts on whatever face she thinks will sell at the moment - like trying to talk "black" in a black church.

So it galls me a little that you can't "put your finger" on anything about Obama... if you aren't trying to find out what he's about, all you'll have is a gut feeling. Do your libraries have the books, like Soz said?

please don't take the condescending high road with me.... I said, very specifically I liked the guy... I just have an off putting feeling about him being the candidate and winning that I can't put my finger on... and I can read too.... I even shower and wear shoes. You wouldn't say that if Obama was white but you have to play the race card and insinuate that I can't read or I'm ignorant or something.... damn.... a white man can't get a break....

Damn, you want some cheese with that? What I said had nothing to do with him being black, but with "funny feelings" being based on something.

I used the example of Hillary because I think there is evidence that might justify my suspicions of her.

I just want you to give him an even chance, and that would include some investigation beyond your gut.

And Thomas I saw clips of the speech to which you refer, but didn't detect him trying to imitate MLK. Other than that, you're right...
Bear can speak for himself.

When I visited Montgomery a month ago, I asked the lady at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church who gave me the tour. She had no problem with Obama imitating MLK, but did notice the imitation. She was in the church when Obama gave the speech. She had also heard MLK preach most Sundays when she was a child, and was deeply into the civil rights movement. I'd say she's a pretty competent judge in this matter. Her name is Mrs. Gamble, and she probably wouldn't mind you calling her up and asking about it. Mrs. Gamble loves talking about Dr. King and his influence.

Indeed he can. So why don't we let Bear be the judge of whether it's a problem I spoke for him?

Sure. You let him speak for himself, I'll let him judge you speaking for him, and you can pm me Mrs Gamble's number. I'd love talking to her. I'll bet if she exists, she doesn't spin it like you do.

I don't have her number. But she does exist, and you could reach her by calling the church at (334) 263-3970. (The number is in the white pages, so there's no reason to PM it.) Alternatively, you could write a letter to "Mrs. Gamble, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, 454 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104". Tours begin at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. If you call 5-10 minutes before a tour begins, your chances of reaching her should be decent.

No need to bet, and no need to de-spin either. I already told you she doesn't mind the imitation. I think she took it as some kind of tribute to MLK, though that's my interpretation. She didn't say it in so many words herself. Anyway, your statement was that you didn't think Obama was imitating. Your statement wasn't that Obama was imitating but it wasn't a problem. Mrs. Gamble would contradict the statement you actually made.

How did this turn so nasty? I'm trying to deal with the fact that I just don't buy into the Obama mania and I don't know why and suddenly we're fighting among oursleves? Can't we all just get along? I'm not a hater..... except of republicans of course...

What do you mean, "turn"? This is a political thread, and all you're seeing is a return to normal after niceness raised its ugly head for a short time.

I said this before, but I do see how the mania would itself be offputting. I was interested in him before the mania started up, so have been happy to see it -- yeah, my guy's getting a ton of attention, cool! If you didn't know much about him before the mania and if the mania was mostly what you did know about him, I can see how it'd affect your view of him.

I still think the books would help, 'specially the first one. His own words, and not so filtered as what's being said and done now.

I know it's not that you dislike him, and that it's you're not sure what kind of president he'd make, but I still think those books would help cut through the hype, and it seems like the hype is part of the problem.

Seriously, I get these little twinges of resistance when Butrflynet posts about him -- so unremittingly positive or something, I'm not sure -- and am aware that I probably cause the same effect in other people.

So you've read the books? It does seem like pertinent info. You're asking how to get past this, I made that suggestion already, you didn't say "I already read 'em" then (or if you did, I missed it).

no soz I haven't read those particular books and I was just kidding around... I'm not touchy or offended... I may give them a read though.... thanks...I've pretty much already made up my mind to support Hillary but things can change.....and I'm not too stubborn to change with them.... unlike the doofus ass who currently occupies the White House...

I'm probably belaboring this point too much. But in BiPolarBear's spirit of brotherhood, I'd like to note that visiting Montgomery has made forgive both Obama and Clinton for their black preacher accents. The place has a powerful aura. If you have a chance to do it, spend a few hours around the Capitol, the Civil Rights Memorial, and the Dexter Avenue Baptist and First Methodist churches. I predict the place will get to you, and you, too, will start talking with a Black Preacher Accent.
