Hi Merry Andrew, naw, we get no rain here in our area. No tornados, no really bad stuff at all. It is a safe spot. (Now that that's been said, we will more than likely be gone tomorrow.) Shocked Very Happy

Stradee, don't you know that the most dangerous and ignorant - in animal societal situations - animals on earth are we humans.

Thus, the old saying, "The road to Hell is paved with the best intentions."

Not quite sure where that came from - but, I have heard it many times.

There is hope. The whales are apparently moving toward the sea again.

Still hoping for the best.

HURRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The whales are swimming in saltwater!!! The Coast Guard will ask oil barges to kill thier engines if the whales are swimming in the same locale. The Benecia Bridge spans over the Carquenez Strait - the bridge connects from Martinez where the Shell Oil Refinery lives - to Benecia. Hope the whales are not swimming near the docking oil barge area - but instead near the fleet of boats the Navy stores on the Benecia side...and i also hope Delta n' Dawn swim very fast past the refinery once they decide to pass underneath the Benecia Bridge!

Dan, a very good adage, and one my mom repeated on occasion. Smile

Boat traffic at the delta very light for the holiday. Appears good humans still reside on the planet. Very Happy or maybe gas prices Sad {who knows}

Check msolga's "Outrage over Japan's plans to slaughter humpback whales" thread. Kudo's Australia! {and for mz olga}

whale update
ABC news

Quote:
Thus far, the U.S. Coast Guard boats monitoring the whales as they swim down river only have had to deal with recreational boats and windsurfers. But as the whales get closer to the bay, they will encounter large oceangoing vessels that could harm them.

"We will try to keep a safe zone around them," said Greg Hurner, a senior adviser with the California Department of Fish and Game. Boats also were being positioned to block entrances to a number of tributaries and sloughs, where the whales are at risk of getting stuck in shallow mudflats.

Both whales have gashes likely suffered from a run-in with a boat's keel that have also worsened during their river stay. But veterinarians believe antibiotics injected into the whales Saturday could slow the damage, and scientist were ready to administer a second dose.

The calf also appears to be more active, which is an encouraging sign, they said.

According to the latest news reports I've heard, the whales have been treated with antibiotics (via dart-gun) which should help their injuries heal and they are definitely heading in the right direction, right towards salt water.

Yeah, they don't like shots either......... Shocked

I've stopped mine - by the way - they were for allergies and I found myself becoming stagnant with respect to their effect. So, I stopped. And, am feeling the same.

Greatest news for the whales - Go for it..........

I'm with you, Danon. I refuse to get flu shots when Winter comes. The couple of times I did get them, years ago, I always came down with the flu later on. Since I've stopped taking them, all I get now are head colds. But I do believe in antibiotics if there's a danger of infection, regardless of how they're adminstered -- orally, topically, intravenously, it's all the same to me.

from Scientific American 23 minutes ago

Quote:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Two humpback whales that swam from the Pacific Ocean far up into central California's inland waterways are approximately 20 miles from open ocean, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said on Tuesday.

The whales, presumed to be a mother and calf, have been in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta for the past two weeks. At one point, they swam as far north as the state capital of Sacramento after entering inland waters through San Francisco Bay.

After efforts to coax them out of the delta failed, the whales began swimming toward the bay on Sunday and by Tuesday afternoon were about 20 miles from the bay's landmark Golden Gate Bridge, where the bay and Pacific Ocean meet, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jonathan Cilley said.

Sacramento Bee - 4 minutes ago !

Quote:
Humpback whales Delta and Dawn are wayward no longer. They are swimming seaward with a purpose, speeding past Angel Island at 4:50 p.m. today and aiming for the Golden Gate.

That fabled portal marks the finish line of their remarkable, two-week saga.

Bernadette Fees, spokeswoman for California State Fish and Game, described the euphoria flooding the whale rescue team as the humpbacks sliced through San Pablo Bay.

<snip>

Quote:
Before reaching the Pacific, the whales have one more bridge to navigate: the Golden Gate.

But the Carquinez Bridge and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge seemed to pose no obstacle to the pair. After some hesitation, they swam beneath its spans while a freight train rumbled by, blowing its horn. There was also a plane overhead and vehicular traffic on the bridge -- plus a gallery of onlookers.

Earlier this morning, there were euphoric shouts from spectators as the calf breeched from the water in a silvery spray - behavior typical of healthy whale young.

Researchers think the antibiotics administered over the weekend are taking effect -- their skin condition is improving with some of the lesions sloughing off.

This 20-day saga has been a virtual treasure trove for researchers seeking to understand whale psychology and physical health. They have been taking still photos, video, and studying the whales' every move from tail lobbing to breeching -including their sometimes seemingly erratic behavior.

Good morning all,

ul, nice photo - I remember many beautiful sunny, clear blue sky and warm days in the Operetta City.

No whale sighting is a good whale sighting. Very Happy

Great clicking folks - since Stradee's post about the AKT URL and (at least my change to click on that link, and I'm sure many more) some passing time to gauge the difference, we have increased slightly our daily clicking rate. Very Happy Very Happy
