I think it's easier to be gay in Europe than in America.....in some parts of America anyway. Would you agree?

Welcome to A2K, Broadslad. We also have our version of "Queer As Folk" which is going in directions I don't believe anyone thought possible a decade ago.

"Six Feet Under" is also delving into this territory (well, the creator Alan Ball is gay and gave us "American Beauty" where the hetrerosexual world collided violently with the homosexual world). "Whoopi" is one of our braver sitcoms but I wonder if it will return next season.

(And it depends on what part of America you are in).

Thanks for the welcome Lightwizard. Yeah i guess that's right..depends where you are in America..the same as here. I hope to go over there pretty soon when I can get enough cash together as I've only just started my job after leaving college and I love it. I work alongside coppers Smile
I taped the UK version of "QAF" off Channel 4 when it was shown here...set in Manchester. I met a really cool American guy from Iowa in Norwich last year...very tall guy and he is living and working here right now so I'm getting to know a lot about America. This is a fantastic site loads of topics. Cheers from England Very Happy

Forgot to say that I think some parts of America are behind UK and rest of Western Europe in attitudes to homosexuality and sexual issues as I have said in other posts of mine. I can't quite get my head round that really. Maybe America is such a huge and diverse country with so many different opinions on all sides. For instance, I told this guy from Iowa that the second officer in command of London's Metropolitan Police force (which covers Greater London) is openly gay. He said that would never happen over there. Maybe he meant in Iowa, not sure about that. Maybe it wouldn't happen in parts of rural UK either so what's the difference? I think it's a generation thing as well as it seems to be older people who make being gay an issue. Most people my age (19) don't give a toss about what sexuality you are.

Well, we did have an openly gay officer run for Chief of Police in L.A. recently. He didn't get the job but it is happening. Laguna Beach had an openly gay mayor for two terms in the 80's. There are many other examples -- it's big country but unforunately in many areas still a bigoted country. It's whether they are priveleged to run things.

I was sort of hoping that Prince Edward (Queen's son) would come out as gay as many people thought he was and maybe still think he is and that he is bi or something. It would be really cool if a member of the royal family was out gay. Personally I don't give a toss as I don't find him at all attractive or any of them as they are a weird family anyway.

I loved it in the beginning. But it's already starting to age.

It does get repetitive very fast. Is it me or have they descended into such a whirlwind of camping they are becoming stereotypical characatures of themselves? The first show of season two was a bead dropping extravaganza.

theyve become cartoon characters wiz. ive quit watching because I think that they havent gone anywhere new. I guess, on reconsidering, that once they play out the initial concept, there really isnt any new ground, unless they take on the AMish or cowboys or a biker gang, like thatll happen.

I'll tell ya this. You'd never catch me in Texas. Or any of the southern states for that matter, with the exception of Florida and Louisiana(have family there).

Well, potna, Texas did contribute one thing recently -- the USSC squelching the stupid sodomy laws.

Yeah, but not Texas as a whole. Just a few people who aren't as primitive as the rest.

I wasn't exactly complimenting Texas because their antiqated sodomy laws were the straw that broke the bronco's back. Very Happy

Hey guys! I am in the UK but do tell me a bit about your famous American Rednecks. Are they really as....erm....what word should I use to adequately describe them?........nasty? ignorant? super macho to the point of insanity? We have our own variety of rednecks here......guys who have ridiculous notions of their precious masculinity...but yours seem a breed apart. Are they found all over the USA? I have a feeling they are mostly found in places like Texas, and that they all wear stetsons and chaps, and when they are not swaggering around the place they are propping up bars in saloons or chopping off the heads of rattlers. Cheers.

Hee hee! That sums it up then...that's all the confirmation I needed. For reasons best known to myself I've been away from this forum but it's nice to be back. I'm looking around to see if I have missed anything world shattering.

Our hot summer weather here in England has left our shores and now it's ******* freezing! I went to a civic service today Sunday 20/06/04 to install a new mayor and town councillors...I only went because of the reception afterwards (and I received an invitation because my dad is a councillor!) and loads of goodies to eat and drink. In the service they had a local Appalachian dance group performing accompanied by fiddlers. It was fantastic....genuine Appalachian mountain dancing group all of whom are English. I love that style of music and dance. I am tempted to join as it's male and female. I have loads of spare energy and it looks like it's needed. Cheers.
