I live on a crazy little street that most people who live in the neighborhood don't even know about. Even MapQuest gives convuluted directions to it. But when I called the police the other day they were here in about 2 minutes.

I think DrewDad is right - you gave the burglar run of the neighborhood by not calling the cops.

No need to shoot him he was scared enough and left post haste. As to my dog. Trek is a beagle and is more scared of his own shadow then anyone else. Sure he makes a lot sound when hes on the other side of the fence but his howl is worse then his bite.

The neighborhood is a good one with very little crime to no crime.

Dogs aren't good for home security, unless they're trained to it.

I have a cabin that is at least 10 minutes away from the nearest officer, if he happens to be at home. If I drive in and there is something amiss, sure I'd call. If I were staying there and someone decided they wanted to come in unannounced, different story.

Like what? I would definitely put dealing with an intruder, even in a garage, as a serious matter.

Especially at 4:30 in the morning. Not a lot of bar fights going on then.

Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with grabbing your gun, calling the police, then let them come and pick him up or catch up to him as he tries to flee when he sees them coming. That way you have the best of both worlds.

You call the cops if you see someone attempting to break into a garage.
Your garage, your neighbor's garage, whatever. It's information they
need to do their job.
