@JTT,

Didn't you also remark that capitalizing the first letter of people's names is a prescription worthy of being followed?

Not when they have chosen small case for themselves. One simply does not write E.E. Cummings as I explained. Are you having memory loss or ADS?

It is you who is in need of a refresher course I fear. You are such a pedantic prescriptivist that it over-rides manners.

@JTT,
And one should avoid using a word like "another" twice in the same line. Flaubert would have said on one page.

In fact you have only three words between them. That's really common.

First you rant about the importance of prescriptions and now you advance linguistic chaos, Spendius. Rolling Eyes

You are one confused puppy, but you know that.

Can you produce that quote?

Is Flaubert a bigger prescriptivist than you?

It's in his collected letters. (Steegmuller.) I'm not looking for it though. You'll find it if you read the book.

But even without Flaubert it jars on the literary aesthete. It's slipshod and while it is understanable in the heat of the moment it is not in the editing.

The young fellow offered to carry my bag of ready mix upstairs for me. I declined. He has been grabbing the heavy work away from me, but he will wear himself out early doing that. The way I look at it, if I can't carry my load, I don't deserve to work there.

I keep seeing ads for a new TV show based on Stephen King's Under the Dome. I remember the title as being that. How many stories can you do about a fish in a bottle?

@edgarblythe,
That would depend on the size of the bottle and the fish. Sorry, the devil made me do it!

I tried watching the show, Golden Boy, but it failed to hold my interest. The seasoned older cop is okay, but not enough to keep me engaged.

Near Houston is a hotbed of Bigfoot 'sightings' and belief. Last night on local TV some of these folk were interviewed. As one says, "We've seen, heard and smelled them." But all admitted they had no solid evidence. A supposed footprint was shown to us, but the camera panned too quickly to actually give us a chance to examine it.

We have been digging up the valves to the sprinkler system, replacing them. Now, the vacuum is leaking badly. It could be that trash clogged it when the city repaired one water line and then replaced one meter a week apart. I know that thing has a float in it. But I have never seen the inside. I hope to convince them to get outside help to make the fix, but I would at least open it up, if given the word.

Francis the talking Pope - Woops. Shouldn't be joking just yet. We probably ought to wait until he has been in office long enough to give us some ammunition, should the need arise.

Love my bamboo backscratcher this morning.

Thinking in music lyrics this morning. Nothing thinkworthy getting through a Fats Domino song right now.

I think Edgar's thread is one of the few that are not overrun by bombastic and irrational posts. It is still interesting to read without being totally ruined by spoilers.

Stay here, Edgar. It's always good to see you.

As I've mentioned before, I always read your 'I Think' thread daily ... even if I don't make a comment. You can tell by the coffee-stain rings I leave behind.
