Some people are just narrow-minded, and can see only one point of a very large topic.

So, universal health care = mandatory health insurance?

That's the way it is in Massachusetts and that's one reason why so many folks are against it. Another reason, folks are against is it's not cheap. Surprised

Plus, we have Medicare for everyone over 65,

Not true!

Medicare is available to those who've paid 40 quarters into the SS system. ( I've said this statement over and over and over again! ).
It is NOT available to everyone who's over 65, unless they pay into another plan.

Nothing if FREE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>!!

Annual physical in Massachusetts for a woman:

$150....physical
$250...lab work ( minimum )
$500...mammogram
$2000...colonoscopy
$400...pelvic sonogram

$300...eye exam
$600+...eye glasses ( more for contacts )
----------------------------------------------
$4200/year estimate for out-of-pocket cost of medical expense ( out-patient visits)
$ 3500/year estimate for dental care

Rx meds: variable but of the order of $1500+/year depending on medical condition of patient.

---------------------------------------------

Fair, minimal estimate for 65+ year old patient=
$7000/year

For the male, add the same costs, drop out pelvic and mammogram and put in prostate evaluation, possible cardiac workup...
------------------------------------------------------------

For the diabetic patient, all of the above plus at least $5000/year more ( estimate)

--------------------------------------------------------

Note:

GOOD HEALTH CARE COSTS MUCH MORE THAN A FEW GALLONS OF GAS.

Who in their right mind would like to take the CTA bus in Chicago to work everyday for a 10 mile ride, through slum, after slum, with nuts shooting bullets at you?

If the doctor doesn't send you for multiple followup tests, it isn't nearly as bad as you are portraying. Its more like around a hundred bucks I think, but maybe not where you live? How much does it cost for a couple tanks of gas for a suburban and does your auto insurance policy pay for it?

$100 will get your dog a PE...

I've quoted the cost for a human annual PE, in terms of out of pocket costs, should you not have insurance. This is a good average for the average American adult who needs quality medical care.

OKIE, do you have your annual PE from your town VET? Even is you have your annual PE from your town vet, it'll cost you more than $100.

Are their cheap horse doctors in your town? Laughing

The next time you have a medical emergency, perhaps you should get some gas in your car's tank instead or, you might pay a visit to the REAL WORLD OF MEDICAL COST IN THE USA TODAY! Laughing

btw both the u.s. (and canadian) government(s) have spent a great deal of money on anti-smoking campaigns .
i believe they have been quite successfull in reducing the number of young people taking up smoking - that would be preventative health-care , would it not ?
would it be fair to asssume that some (american) a2k'ers object to the government becoming involved in these prevention style health-care measures and that it would be better to have more young people take up smoking ? (particularly considering that the U.S. constitution likely makes no mention of it ?)

Actually,to finance all of the child health programs that are being financed by cigarrette taxes it would be better if more young people took up smoking.

Otherwise, there wont be enough money to finance all of these programs.

A medical emergency probably is not a routine checkup that I was referring to. I do in fact pay for my own family's checkups. To repeat, a high deductible insurance protects me from catastrophic costs, which a medical emergency might incur, but routine office visits without extensive testing are not yet prohibitive. Also, a high deductible insurance may pay for certain screening tests, because the insurance companies recognize that prevention of more serious treatment might save them money in the long run. It would depend upon your policy.

Such is either totally free here e.g. mamography screening, which is paid by the association of all health insurance comapnies and the Federal Chamber of Physicans.

My insurance company offers free check ups:
- general check up (any two years) [from the age of 35 years onwards]
- colon and rectum examination (annually), [50 years old]
- two colonoscopies (within a period of ten years), [55 years old]
- prostata- and gentals examination (any year) [40 years old]*
- dental check-up (twice per year) [18 years old - before that it's in the fre children dental care]

*my wife gets instead of that a breast and genital examination (and a mammography-screening any other year additionally). [20 resp 30 years]

Those check-ups are totally free = no fee is paid as well.

All other check-ups are made when recommended by the doctor/specialist.

walter : before others jump on you - i know we've been through this before - , i believe what you mean to say is that those procedures are covered by your insurance .
that's the same in ontario - except for dental work which is either paid by the patient , paid for through additional , private insurance , or paid through social assistance for low income citizens .

annual eye examinations are paid-for for seniors and we have an annual $200 re-imbursement for eyeglasses through our private insurance .

the only time we ever had to pay our physician was for a statemant for our travel insurance , certifying that we could not travel when we applied for a refund ; we also have to pay $15 for a referral to a massage therapist since it is covered by our private insurance - and they want a physicians assessment .

Nothing is free. Somebody is paying for it, and so if it is not paid directly by the person receiving the service, then the cost is hidden and paid through taxes or through insurance fees, either by you or someone else.
