"Notes on a Scandal". It was pretty good. Judi Dench was terrific, Cate Blanchette as well. I didn't get why she fell for that boy, tho. I understood that her life had been less than what she dreamed of but, I still didn't get it. If a kid came onto me like that, so bold and relentless, I'd have to take a switch to him.

Just finished watching "The Queen" with Helen Mirren. Terrific!

After the press had ripped the Royals, Elizabeth in particular, to shreds over their no-show behavior after Diana's death, Elizabeth told Tony Blair that someday it could happen to him..."without a moments' notice."

That line was so full of prophecy, I screamed. I wonder if the screenplay was written before or after things turned ugly and Tony Blair was stomped into the dirt for his blunderous association with George Bush?

Saturday night I put The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy into the DVD player as a bit of homework/revision because I was gonna see The Bourne Ultimatum today(Sunday). Then, seeing as I was into the trilogy mode,I followed those with Star Wars:Revenge Of The Sith.Definatley not for the acting, but for the quality of the upscaled 1080p picture.

The Fairest Fair Lady
And talking of picture quality,I watched,on DVD,My Fair Lady.
On examining the best remaining copy of this classic film,a team of expert restores discovered a fading piece of art, about to be lost forever. The negative was on the verge of decay and in a delicate state of disrepare. It was so brittle that it kept tearing so it had to be transfered to computer and copied digitally. From there they could work on each frame and correct colour and take out scratches and dirt etc. This took 6 months and cost over $600,000.
They also found a wealth of buried treasure, including never-before-seen footage of how the film was made and two of Audrey Hepburn's original sound tracks (In the film,Ms Hepburn's singing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also was the singing voices of Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Deborah Kerr in The King And I)
Cecil Beaton's costumes have never looked so good! The audio track has had a gentle tweek to 5.1,enhancing Lerner and Loewe's music and lyrics.
Now the world can have "The Lady" in all her splendor in it's original 70MM Panavision and state of the art digital sound.
The Lady is definately back Very Happy

Girl With A Pearl Earing.
Based on the novel by Tracy Chevalier, but with the whole of the plague back-story removed, some called this film a literary adaptation, others a domestic thriller. It's a story of a young girl who goes to work in the household of the master painter Johannes Vermeer and strikes up an extraordinary relationship with him.
Due to a bit of digital tweeking, this film looks like a moving painting from start to finish. The sets, which are beautifully lit, look very convincing.
A nice little film to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I just recently saw this as well. I thought Judi Dench did a wonderful job. Agreed about the boy though.... I just don't see how that could happen.

The last movie I saw was Match Point. I'm not a fan of Scarlett Johansen so the movie definitely didn't do it for me.

Lawrence Of Arabia.
David Lean's splendid biography of the enigmatic T.E.Lawrence is a regular visitor to my DVD player. It paints a complex portrait of the desert-loving Englishman who united Arab tribes in a battle with Ottoman turks during World War 1.

"Idlewild" with Andre (2000) Benjamin and Paula Patton. It was quite stylized and very nice to look at. The energy of the big dance and club scenes reminded me alot of "Moulin Rouge" with Nicole Kidman.

from hell. stars johnny depp, as an inspector investigating the jack the ripper case. not something you'll remember all your life, but it's a fun way to spend two hours. you know, the suspense and all. and johnny depp's acting is always enjoyable. ian holm was impressive. you almost forget heather graham is in it... ah, well, you can't have everything... Laughing

"Heights," Ismail Merchant's last produced film which got a two thumbs up from Ebert and Roeper in 2005. Not the usual epic story but a very personal 24 hour examination of the unique NYC lifestyle involving the Broadway stage. Glenn Close is, of course, playing it to the hilt as the Shakespearean diva actor, but understated, deeply felt performances of Elizabeth Banks (the wife in "Sea Biscuit"), James Marsden (Lois Lane's fiancee in "Superman Returns") and Jesse Bradford (graduating from the teen idol roles) are wonderful to watch. Can't begin to outline any plot as the revelations in the personal lives slowly unfolds in a short 98 minutes to reveal realistic thoughts about the human condition.

I couldn't get into that one, LW. But I will try and watch it again. Anything with Ms. Close is worth another shot, right?

"The Departed," a masterpiece of film making by Martin Scorsese. He pulled out all the stops and it is cinematically equal to "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas."

After watching it I tried watching Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and while I think Eastwood's "Mystic River," "Million Dollar Baby,"and "Unforgiven" are great pieces of directing, watching "Flags of Our Fathers," seemed like a mediocre piece of work and showed how simply fantastic Scorsese is as a director.

Love "The Departed" for the traditional Hollywood gangster film structure, but after all, it is Scorcese. Too bad he wasn't able to work with Jimmy Cagney in his career.

Liked "Letters from Iwo Jima" a lot but not anxious to see "Flags."

Actually "The Departed" was the last movie I saw too. And for the life of me I still do understand WHY it got an academy award. Jack N's portrayal of "tha man " was pathetic and lacking".

All I can say is that if can't lay it out the way it really was, why bother.
