I guess I won't be seeing many DVD or VHS films anymore for the time being. The cable company serving our building has gone digital and that means stepping ten years or more back in time.

Apparently, the company has the right to stop passing on analogue signals, while still charging for the connection, and to force us to buy a digibox for which the base package only contains half the channels that we had in our analogue base package (for which we still pay). To see all the channels we had, we have to buy a monthly prescription and we also have to pay more in electricity costs since the digibox cannot be turned off other than by pulling the plug. (I am not quite complete, we do have a new channel, a christian-extremist-rightwing channel (no, not Fox-News) called TV7. I can't understand the cable company even allows it on its network where innocent children may be exposed to this crap.)

And on top of that we will be forced to replace our excellent TV-VCR combination, because it does not have all the connectors that the digibox requires in order for our DVD-player to work with the digibox! And what is the gain for us? Frankly I do not see or hear any difference when I watch TV, so to me this whole digitalisation is one big scam by the cable companies and the TV networks to squeeze more money out of us.

If I lived alone, I would simply forego TV entirely, but I have my family to think of...

I was given "V for Vendetta" for Christmas and was so stunned that the giver knew how much I would love it.

It's all brooding and about justice an' morality an' stuff.

Zorro for the C21.

Wonderful.

"Purple Rain" in HD-DVD.
For twenty-plus years I thought that all of the dancers on the balcony in the club First Avenue were dressed in military garb but now in HD, I see that only one was.
Wow.

Away From Her
In my "quest" to see as many BAFTA nominated films as possible before the results are announced,good old Mr. Postman delivered Away From Her today.Had to wait until the early hours of the morning to watch it as I was at the pictures watching another nominee No Country For Old Men which was well up to expectations,but I didn't "get" the ending.
Away From Her was not the film I expected.It was poignant and unsentimental.Just how do you "let someone go",after 45 years of marriage,who is stricken by Alzheimer's Disease and still carry on with your own life? Highly recommended watching and well worth the £7 for the DVD.

This weekend I scored:
- Planet Terror; the film makers had really succeeded in bringing back the cinema atmosphere of the seventies. It was quite amusing.
- The Quest (2003); Total and utter crap. I blame MTV for making this strain of mouldy adolescent BO marketable.
- The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants; Much better than I had expected from the Finnish title ("4 girls and a pair of magic jeans"), quite good adolescent film.
- Jadesoturi (2006, Jade Warrior); an intriguing story blending love and myth and a dose of kung fu, very different from mainstream Finnish Cinema.

Yeah, I've been revisiting some old movies I've seen because I'm just now getting them on DVD.

One devasatingly good movie is In The Company of Men, an allegory of the ultra-competitiveness of the corporate male.

On DVD-
Longford.Have you ever been "taken in" by someone,and totally believed them,that you would stake your reputation on them?The well-meaning Lord Longford was truly led up the garden path when he campaigned for the release of the evil child killer Myra Hindley.She took all the hard work he did for her and threw it in his face.Jim Broadbent magnificently plays our misguided hero and is ably supported by a strong cast.

Nicholas Nickleby."Cor blimey guvnor,that Charles Dickens don't 'arf tell a good story,don't 'e!" This is the 2002 version staring more A list stage and screen thesps than you can shake a stick at.Marvelously acted and featuring a great score and a wonderful supporting cast.A joy to watch!

Watched the Zero Mostel/Gene Wilder version of "The Producers" last night. Laughed as much as I always do.

To top everything else off, it really is a love letter to New York and Broadway.

~~~
Watched Married to the Mob on t.v. this afternoon. It has my favourite romantic moment in it. Funny and sweet.
film
I liked an Australian film I saw recently in New Zealand called 'Lucky Miles'. It was about asylum seekers, but it was funny. And that was nice.
