There are lots of things we can do.

Vote for people who will change things.

Write letters. Complain.

Research. Find out what works, suggest that our local districts do the same.

Get involved. Find out who to talk to, talk to them.

I've done some of this, can do a lot more.

Oh really? What power do you personally have to change a system that you don't like in your country? And if you have no power to change it, does that mean you won't complain?

Well, we live in a democracy here.
Personally, as a poll worker/poll judge I give a feedback about how what worked or didn't work.
This is collected and if possible changes are done on local basis.

If changes have to be done on the more legal side - I just go to my state lawmaker, point to that problem and she'll address it in the relevant parliamentary committee (actually she would delegate it, since she's no member in it).

Even Heather Wilson, my (GOP) congresswoman, is still hanging in the balance on those remaining ballots to be counted and she was running against a candidate who ran the world's worst campaign and is probably the most inept campaigner that has ever run for that position.

That could be easily seen the other way around as well.

Fox probably still hadn't analyzed the results of those candidates Bush campaigned for. Personal power and influence is an oxymoron when it involves the president.

No, Walter said if you can't personally change it, then don't complain. (He probably didn't mean it quite that way, but that's what he said.)

I am about as active politically as you can get without actually being on some politico's staff or running for office, so I've done all you suggest and then some. But the fact is, at least in this country, my opinion is only good if it is in the majority. Apparently in Germany (according to Walter), the individual opinion is enough to change something.

Fox, Political ideas usually germinate from an individual. If it has merit, it'll grow. If not, it'll die.

I didn't say that.

You ask me - Walter Hinteler - what I - Walter Hinteler - could personally do.

And I answered. With more than 30 years as a pollworker/poll judge they listen - at least - to what I say in these matters.

No, he said

I really think, you should either change the system or stop complaining.

In no way clear that he was talking to "you" as in Foxfyre (seeing how Walter quoted both dlowan and you). Could as well have been "you" as in American citizens or "you" as in posters here on A2K in their respective countries, etc. etc.

I don't think I'm missing something in translation here, now....

I acknowledged that Walter probably didn't mean it as he said it. But when he posts my words under my name and then says 'you should' without qualifying it as a universal 'you', I assume he means me.

Well you appeared to be agreeing with Dlowan who was directing such comment directly to me though she distorted what I said too. And you further quoted my hometown paper. But I will accept that you were not directing your comment to me personally.

Just a suggestion (and I realize it might sound ridiculous to all of you): why not talk about the actual topic at hand?

I found these suggestions sozobe made quite interesting:

I'd be interested in learning how this would actually work. Anyone?

In that regards, I have voted at every election since I was able to, write regularly to my congresswoman, and have volunteered for one year on the Santa Clara Grand Jury. We contribute in different ways, no less effective or influential.

Yes, you said

Foxfyre wrote:
I certainly did not vote for the person in charge of counting those ballots

However, I admit that I don't have much of a clue when it comes to the actual procedure. I've been learning a lot re voting machines and primaries recently.

But how, specifically, do the votes get counted? Who's responsible for overseeing the procedure? Why do you get to vote for people in charge of counting the votes, and who is in charge when those people get elected? Very Happy

Seriously, though. I'd appreciate the input!

oe, We've had more attorneys visiting voting places during this election than any time in the past to ensure funny things don't happen. I'm not sure how effective that was, but I believe there will be more and more people getting involved to ensure voting accuracy in the future.

It's clear that you and I will never coincide in our views on a large number of issues. There is perhaps no one on a2k whom I've more often wanted to whack with a big slimey codfish.

But I feel that I ought to let you know how much I respect your courage in continuing to stand up and talk. After an election which must have been a serious disappointment in a number of ways, you are still here voicing your opinions. You deserve a tip of the hat.
