Is flag-waving stupid and immature?

And she a bit of a Blair poodle and a nuisance for afters.

She thinks she knows what's best for us.

What aspect of psychiatric social work did she specialise in Mac. There's a wide range of possibilities.

Search me, matey....I just lifted that straight off the first website I saw.

Is it vital you have this information? Or maybe you're like me, and don't give a stuff.

Mac's post about the World Cup is not quite right.

There are 8 groups of 4 teams A to H. They are seeded. Thus there are 6 matches played in each group.

In the second round the matches are between

Winner of group A plays 2nd in group B Match 1
Winner of group C plays 2nd in group D Match 2
Winner of group B plays 2nd in group A Match 3
Winner of group D plays 2nd in group C Match 4
Winner of group E plays 2nd in group F Match 5
Winner of group G plays 2nd in group H Match 6
Winner of group F plays 2nd in group E Match 7
Winner of group H plays 2nd in group G Match 8

Quarter Finals are between-

Winner of Match 1 plays winner of Match 2 (QF1 4pm 30-6-06 Berlin)
Winner of Match 5 plays winner of Match 6 (QF2 8pm 30-6-06 Hamburg)
Winner of Match 3 plays winner of Match 4 (QF3 4pm 1-7-06 Gelsen)
Winner of Match 7 plays winner of Match 8 (QF4 8pm 1-7-06 Frankfurt)

Semi Finals

SF 1- Winner of QF 1 plays winner of QF 2 (8pm 4-7-06 Dortmund)
SF2- Winner of QF 3 plays winner of QF 4 (8pm 5-7-06 Munich)

Final. Sunday 7pm 9-7-06 Berlin

3rd place play off between losing semi-finalists Sat 8pm 8-7-06 Stuttgart)

Latest spread betting

100 Index.

Brazil Sell 49 Buy 52
France Sell32 Buy 35
England Sell31 Buy34
Argentina Sell 30 Buy 33
Germany Sell 30 Buy 33
Italy Sell 26 Buy 29
Holland Sell 25 Buy 28
Portugal Sell23 Buy 26
Sweden Sell 18 Buy 21
Czech Rep Sell 17 Buy 20
Mexico Sell 16 Buy 19
Ukraine sell 15 Buy 18
Croatia Sell 10 Buy 13
Poland Sell 10 Buy 13

No hopers even cheaper.

Winner -100 2nd 75 Both semi losers 50 QF losers 25 Last 16 losers 10

So if you back England at £10 per point as I have

If they win cup you win 100-34 = 66 x 10 =£660
If they lose in final you win 75-34 =41 x 10 =£410
If they lose in semi final you win 50-34 =16 x 10 = £160
If they lose QF you lose 34-25 =9 x 10 =£90
If they lose in last 16 you lose 34-10 =24 =£240
And if they don't get that far you lose all 34 x10 =£340.

It will be great.

But an amateur clairvoyant in the pub is predicting some un-named catastrophe. But he's a pessimist with a fissog to match.

Come on England.

USA are in Group E and have no chance.I'm thinking of selling France at 32 but they are in an easy group.

It is worth noting that the top teams consist of millionaires so if you enjoy seeing millionaires getting kicked with no protectives like softies wear you'll enjoy it.

Bit late coming here...will read up later

just wanted to say the most Cross of St George flags I saw on one vehicle was 6. Inevitably on a white van.

A couple of days ago my cousin from France was over. I walked into town with him... he says oh all those flags...I had no idea it was St George's day...

which precipitated a collapse.

(Well he is very clever...football is a little beneath him, but even so one would thought that living in France and celebrating in 1998, he would have made a better guess)

Spendi! no idea you were into spread betting...

But surely you would get a better price for England if you bought in Germany?

Ukraine looks a good buy to me.

And I think this time its right to sell Brazil.

Anyone else here know what we are talking about?

I hate flag waving. Especially when its the wrong flag. Bunch of poopity heads (thanks dys) all of them. People round here have England flags hangin out their windows, all over their cars, in the pubs and bars, shops. SCHOOLS the place has gone mad.

But as I said elsewhere I am really puzzled why there are no St George's Flags flying in Munich. Not one. But every other team is represented. Is it that the Germans dont want to wave the crusader flag under the noses of the Islamic nations? Really puzzled by this.

anywhoo stuff Saudi Arabia, come on England!

I knew some Morris Dancers a few years ago. Full kit.

Talk about leching boozers. The lady dancers were divine. I love girls all dressed in national costumes which are pretty and identical.

It's all jolly good fun on the village green on summer evenings.

I can see how this next month is going to be very difficult for Spendius. All those pretty girls in various states of national (un)dress...dancing flag waving football and betting. Hard to contain one's excitement.

It is my impression Mac that the number of flags to be seen is noticeably less than it was for the previous tournament which was the European Cup played in Portugal in 2004.

If I am right it may be due to your influence in castigating jingoistic flag waving and associating it with fascism and low class people and the snobs, following your leadership, are eschewing such naff displays which "flag up" their obvious lack of intelligence and appreciation of refined etiquette thus suggesting that they are the type of people who read newspapers which publish large numbers of pictures of scantily dressed models and who don't bother removing the pots from the sink before urinating into it.

You should try being serious more often Spendi...you have a certain talent with words. What do you think of the Czech Republic's chances?

Thanks for that.

Ashly I wanted to talk about flag-waving in general, not just about football supporters.

But, there's plenty of flags fluttering in my neck of the woods, despite my efforts in castigating the lower orders. Who now, apparently, have been joined by David Cameron and Tony Blair, which gentlemen never knowingly let a bandwaggon pass without trying pathetically to jump on.

Hey there was a great picture of Bavarian Schuhplattler dancers, complete with lederhosen in the Guardian Sport section today. Did you see it, Steve? I don't think you can get it in the e-version of the paper.

They can be expected to qualify for the 2nd round. They are in with Italy,USA and Ghana.

If they top group E they will play the 2nd in Group F and assuming Brazil will top that group it will be be Croatia,Japan or Australia all of whom I expect they would beat.

But Italy should top that group and thus,if they are second, will play the winner of Group F which is likely Brazil. That ought to finish them.

They have a lot to do and at 20 to buy they probably have few friends.
They are 24 to buy on a 40 index in their group with 1st (40),2nd (20) and 3rd (10). Italy are 28,USA 15 and Ghana 9.

You would be betting on them topping the group and thus avoiding Brazil who are 36 on their 40 index which is pretty short. If they do play Brazil and lose you would lose 10.If they won you would have a decent chance of getting to the semis with only winner of France v Spain to get past.

I think I have that right.

I'm going on our brave lads. I think they are going to be difficult to score against. But Italy always do well whenever I don't back them.

You couldn't expect a politician to do otherwise Mac. It's hardly "pathetic" when it's in the nature of the job. You'll be saying that a dog begging for a biscuit is pathetic next.

Your distaste for politicians is unreasonable. What would we do without them. Are you in favour of leaders who don't need to be elected?

(Just come in from the shops, I don't sit here all day you know)

Now there's an idea.
Somebody once said, I think it was me and also somebody else, that anyone who had the ambition of being a politician & in goverment, controlling everybody else, automatically disqualifies himself from deserving your vote.

Most of them, of whatever stripe, are a deeply dishonourable lot IMHO.
