her first exam is today.
At 1030.

Dr Cox's office, ( GOD i love these people) are going to have his nurse Sandy do an exam so we dont have to run off to an opthomologist..
just yet.
So she is getting her well baby check up, school notes, and an eye exam..

What they will be watching for is muscular damage. Because, I dont truly know how you could test a child of 2 for anything else?

****.... she cant even say "Orange" yet, so how can you test her colors or sight? Know what I mean?

But, I ...... just as before...... have this feeling that her eye is as 'good as its gonna get'.

Simply because, she CAN see with her eye.. but... it still doesnt come to the center of her socket when she looks at you.
If you look at her pupils, her left pupil is off the center mark when she is focusing.
it is down, and a little to the center of her face.

The really good part about this is that you cant REALLY tell..
I had a friend over the other day who was staring at Jillian trying to see the problem, and said she wouldnt have noticed if I didnt point it out.

the bad part about this is that it has not gotten any better from there.
It seemed that her body did a marathon race to heal everything, and it worked.

-You can hardly tell where she had her stitches.

-She had not one bruise

-all the swelling is gone

At first her eye was droopy and wouldnt even come up.

So, from where she WAS... wowser.. this is amazing. :-)

So- heres to hoping this may be the one and only exam she needs because she will be fine and has all her sight.. and... because our insurance wont cover but 82% if we go to an opthomologist's office.. Mad

Cheers..

I've got my fingers crossed that all is well, and that an opthamologist visit isn't required!

there.. got that off my chest.

Ok. So today she got her well baby exam, and the god awful chicken pox shot.
I have heard too many times that the chicken pox shot is mandatory in
some schools.. to save hassle, I just did it. Against my gut.. but hey.

She is fine and healthy.

The eye exam was a simple , easy , very basic exam but thanks to the doc
we didn't have to drop a 75 dollar co pay for this one.

bad news is that she WILL have to go have more extensive exams done.

There is damage to the retina.

Don't know exactly what kind, but apparently, you can see it with a simple scope exam.
She just had the typical- cup over one eye, then the other type of exam.
Checked to see IF she could see on both sides and she can.
her pupils contract as they should, though it did seem that the left eye was a tad behind in that as well.

>sigh<

so .. here's to the beginnings of exams that are totally expensive , for some random doctor later on to tell me " Hey. Your daughter has a problem with her left eye"

Sometimes life is one damn thing after another.

Better that Bean have a small blind spot in her physical vision than that her internal sight is damaged.

My older son is legally blind in one eye and severely impaired in the other and a delightful person all the same. His hearing, touch, smell and taste are all in excellent shape and he can tell a hawk from a handsaw at 100 paces.

Talk to the opthomologist's office when you make the appointment. They may be willing to waive part of the fee--you won't know until you ask.

Hold your dominion.

That's hard. But it will all turn out right in the end. I'm pulling for her, and you, as I'm sure many here are.
Keep us updated, please.

OK, retina damage queen speaking here. Someone else on a2k has dealt with this too, forget who right this minute.

Review for me, are you having her seen at the the university? can you have her seen there? (I was seen at UCLA eye clinic for $9.00 a visit when I first visited, before getting one particular expert as a private eye doc.)

I haven't checked out the retinal specialists in albuquerque just yet, waiting for my insurance transfer, such as it is, to settle, but my past ophthamologist found nine retinal specialists at the UNM... and I plan to look into those re their specialties one of these days. You might try for the expertise at the uni/Texas... there is probably an eye clinic, betting my bippy.

Wildly guessing that she may have a retinal tear. Don't freak, I had four, all fixed. There are people who know this stuff. Anyone checking her eye pressure? Well, I presume they are, not to alarm you, indeed just thinking out loud, and not to subvert her doc.

Still, consider inquiring..

Hmm.. the doctor didnt say anything specific.

No mention of a tear..
but that would make perfect sense if that is what is going on in her eye.

She hit something full force , to where her eyeball took the brunt of the impact. I could easily see how that could cause the eyeball to seperate in tiny places like that.

Eyeball pressure?
Never heard of it.. I will ask on her next visit , ug.. wich I forgot to schedule.. and see if that is something that needs to be checked

So, your tears just healed on their own?
Or did you have to have something special done to your eyes?

Shewolf, Osso is right. It is important that Bean be examined by an Opthamologist as soon as possible. They have the highest skills in the profession.

I absolutly agree.
But funds dont allow that until the first of the month.

That is why the ER doctor stepped up to allow us to come in for such a simple exam .. to make sure there isnt anything really dangerous going on in that little eye.
And for that I am very thankful. Smile

I don't know if retinal tears self-fix, shewolf (and don't know that she has one, of course). Mine were corrected surgically by a retinal surgeon. But, yes, she should be seen by an ophthamologist. If Uni Texas doesn't have a med center eye clinic - clinics usually having fees based on a sliding scale, with a low fee for those unable to pay more - there may be one somewhere else in Texas with some driving time..

This will seem a weird link, but shows that there are retinal experts at the UT Dallas; found the link when I looked up - eye clinic UT Dallas Parkland Med Center.

http://www.swmed.edu/home_pages/ophth/retfel.htm

I had looked up UT Austin first, and their med facility doesn't seem as broad ranging.

Will keep looking.

I know that it will not relieve any of the angst you are feeling about Bean but my eyeballs are an absolute disaster. Honestly, it's a miracle that I can see at all after what my eyeballs have been through and their constant whining and clammoring for attention now.

Despite all of this, I make a living looking at things.

I hope Bean's vision is restored to perfection.

My mom worked in Texas for an optomitrist for years and years. I'll give her a call and see if she knows about any way to get a break on opthomolgy services....

The Hermann Memorial Children's Hospital in Houston apparently has an ophthalmology clinic...
http://www.memorialhermann.org/locations/CH.html

Here's a list of pediatric ophthalmologists in Austin from the yellow pages website -
http://yellowpages.superpages.com/listings.jsp?SRC=google&T=Austin&S=TX&L=Austin+TX&CID=00000494031&CL=1&search=Find+It

Eh, the link doesn't work. Well, then, I guess they do list pediatric ophthalmologists in the yellow pages.
