@Advocate,
Nobody made a greater effort than Sen. McCain to pass immigration reform when it was previously before Congress. NOBODY, and that includes Obama.

Trying to paint McCain as bigoted is beyond belief.

@cicerone imposter,
Are you referring to McCain? He loves illegals, and is almost as bad as O'Moron.

@Advocate,
If it's true that
Quote:
National Journal reported earlier this month that McCain derogatorily referred to a group of Latinos he was meeting with as "you people."
tells me that he believes he's superior to "you people." Tell me if I'm wrong.

@cicerone imposter,
There is nothing wrong with "you people," unless you are hyper-sensitive. But I guess it is not PC. It was a slip of the tongue.

@Advocate,
Okay, but I also remember when McCain called the Vietnamese people "gooks."

@Advocate,
They already are; because the job market is almost nonexistent, many more youths are volunteering to serve in the military.

@Advocate,
This useless digression would have been avoided if you had posted a link to the source >

What began as a collegial airing of views abruptly changed when McCain spoke about immigration, according to these sources, who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution.

> which is obviously a bunch of paranoid fanatics - they don't want to be quoted from "fear of retribution"?? What form might this retribution take?!

I was just looking at some photos on the net of the newly deceased pornstar, Marilyn Chambers. I was shocked -- she was the splitting image of O'Moron.

@cicerone imposter,
And he clearly said that he was refering to those that held him prisoner, NOT all of the vietnamese people.
But, you conveniently left that part out because it would hurt your case.

Quote:
Back in 2002, the Senator told reporters, "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live." While McCain was referring specifically to unsavory prison guards during his time as a prisoner of war, his comments made Vietnamese people go crazy. You can still read some of the accounts at AsianWeek.com and AsianAM.org.

Quote:
Here’s exactly what he said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle

”I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live.“

If you’re an ardent supporter of John McCain or the Republican party, you may feel inclined to scream obscenities and label this piece as slander or “a hit job”. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can read the piece that inspired this writing here: “John McCain’s racist remark very troubling.” And to be fair, John McCain did apologize for making the reference even though the media was slow to pick up on the story:

“I will continue to condemn those who unfairly mistreated us,” McCain said in a statement released Feb. 21. “But out of respect to a great number of people for whom I hold in very high regard, I will no longer use the term that has caused such discomfort… I apologize and renounce all language that is bigoted and offensive, which is contrary to all that I represent and believe.”

Also, John McCain’s campaign responded to the story:

“We hope that people understand that the senator was referring very specifically to the men who beat and tortured him for five and a half years in a prisoner of war camp”

McCain campaign spokesperson Dan Schnur, continued:

“His language in no way represents his feelings toward the people in Vietnam or the Vietnamese American community.”

So you are being disingenous by ignoring the part that doesnt support you.
You attack others for doing that, yet you did the exact same thing now.

@mysteryman,
mm, I know all that, because I personally wrote to McCain, and he promised me that he would never use that word again. So, what's your point?

People have to watch what they say, then try to correct what they said later on when they are challenged when it involves racial epithets.

I've lived through WWII, and when people used the word "Jap," it meant even Japanese Americans. You don't need to give me a lesson on language and its meanings.

I wasnt, but you apparently did need a lesson on selective editing.
You decided not to tell the whole truth, only the part that you thought supported your position.

McCain's use of gooks is racial and inexcusable. It is similar to using "niggers." I don't blame the Viets for being ticked. But as I said before, there is nothing wrong with "you people."

@mysteryman,
mm, I never questioned your challenge by posting more than what I wrote. What's your problem? If I had a problem with it, I would have responded with a challenge that what you wrote was wrong. What I wrote was my personal feeling/thoughts on the issue, and tried to emphasize my point.

@Advocate,
There's nothing wrong with "you people" in and of itself, but it's my personal opinion it has more of a negative meaning when used against one group of people. I may be more sensitive than I need to be.

If you had ever fought in a war, you would know it is a way to de-humanize the enemy, and I think almost every army does this in some way. When I was in Vietnam, the term, "gook," was used freely and openly among the GI's. I don't know what the NVA called us, but I doubt it was in indearing terms.

GI's however saw through this and understand it for what it is. They also treated citizens and allies in that country with respect as fellow human beings. Anyone experiencing war understands this in a deeper way. And I believe McCain does, and I do not believe for a minute that he is a racist.

@okie,
We can always rely on you to be an apologist for a fellow Rep, no matter what he or she did. McCain left the military many years ago, is a senator, etc., and should know better than using such a term. It is really beyond belief.

@Advocate,
What okie never sees is that a name like "gook" is heard by many Vietnamese around the w0rld including Americans. It's offensive no matter how and why he used that word. "Apologist" is a good term for okie.
