The Winter Olympic Games in Turin will start in 10 days.
Perhaps a Fantasy Prediction Game will make them more fun.

6 Simple Rules of the Game:

1. Every participant will choose a "team" of 10 national olympic teams (divided by gender in the case of the Germany, Norway and USA teams). The aggregate result of these national olympic teams will determine the winner, on the basis of 5 points for every gold medal, 3 points for every silver medal, and 1 point for every bronze medal.

2. The 10 national olympic teams must be chosen from 3 different pools, in which the nations have been divided, according to their performance in Salt Lake City 2002, plus a host nation factor.

3. Each participant must choose 3 olympic teams from Group A, 3 olympic teams from Group B and 4 olympic teams from Group C (with encompasses all nations not in any of the former groups).

4. Since Germany, Norway and the USA Olympic Teams gets the most medals, they will be divided in USA Male, USA Female, Norway Male, Norway Female, Germany Male, Germany Female. Any medal won by a mixed duo or team (ice skate dancing, for example), will count for both male and female teams.

5. The medal count will be based on the OIC count. That is, collective medals count as one.

6. All participants must enter their predictions before the opening olympic ceremony: February 10th, 20:00 GMT

Prizes:

Winner: Virtual Gold Medal, and congratulations from every one.
Runner Up: Virtual Silver Medal.
Third Place: Virtual Bronze Medal.

Groups:

Group A:

USA Men
USA Women
Germany Men
Germany Women
Norway Men
Norway Women
Russia
Italy
Canada

Group B:

Austria
Switzerland
France
Netherlands
South Korea

Group C:

I'll do my best to post daily standings of the A2K Fantasy Olympics Predition Game. No guarantee, though.

Good luck to everyone.

For the second time, I'll enter the competition based on choices with no data at all to back me up.
Luckily I don't remember just how badly I did last time, so this doesn't deter me. I am boycotting some of my favorite sports writers, as the NYT is charging now for online reading, so actual information will not pass before my eyes.

Group A
Norway Men
Russia
Italy

Group B
Austria
Switzerland
Finland

Group C
Japan
Romania
Ukraine

I pressed the A2K Fart Button, and it told me its view of my selections.

I forgot the tenth, beg pardon, so I'll grab Estonia for group C, as a sentimental favorite.

Oh, I have no data, either. I picked Ukraine because my company has an office there, and everyone we've worked with there is really nice (and, when they were last here, they drove to New Hampshire and went snowboarding - see, there's a connection to winter sports, tenuous though it may be).

An advise for future newcomers:

Do not choose Mexico in group C.
Yes, our 4 man bobsled beat both USA II and Jamaica I, last year, but two of the crewmen got a 2 year suspension for nandrolone.
Yes, Mexican born European noble slalom skier Ubertus Von Hohenlohe was ready for his fifth olympic participation, but the Mexican OC denied permission, since he's almost 40 and his best place has been 29th.
And the Muñana siblings finished 25th in the figure skating rank. Only the first 24 go to Turin.

Good, this new players mean that some of us will be deprived of a medal.

Oh, and Farmerman, the way things go, Angel Making will probably make the Winter Olympics around 2026.

I think the Board of Governing Selectors is waiting for synchronization to occur.

Curling fever has swept the USA.
If the men's team does not make a a respectable showing, heads will roll!

I was just looking over our picks.
Interesting that no team made it to all five charts.
The heavy favorites are Austria and Switzerland with four votes each.

Hey jpinMilwaukee! You're going to have to change your Canada pick.
They're not in Group C.
