The Thrill of Victory, The Agony of Defeat
We are All Champions
Life is truly an Olympic event. Go for the Gold!

Quote:
Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport! The thrill of victory...and the agony of defeat! The human drama of athletic competition! This is ABC's Wide World of Sports!
The agonized athlete was a Slovene ski jumper by the name of Vinko Bogataj. A respected jumper and a fierce competitor, Bogataj's fate took a turn for the worse at the World Ski Flying Championships in 1970. Midway through his third run, Bogataj felt he was going too fast and tried to slow down. Unfortunately, he lost his balance and tumbled spectacularly over the side of the ramp. Bogataj suffered only a concussion, though apparently he never again jumped with quite the same "abandon." Understandable, if you ask us.

An interesting side note: Bogataj lived behind the Iron Curtain. As a result, he had no idea how infamous his crash had become in the United States. So it was with great confusion that he accepted an invitation to attend ABC's "Wide World of Sports" anniversary show. Once there, he found himself hounded by fans (including Muhammad Ali) who wanted to shake hands with "the agony of defeat." We call that a minor victory.

What would the hypothetical "perfect" combination be? What's the score for this combination?
How would I do if I could participate? (PM me if necessary.)

That was a rout (6.9% more points) compared to the summer olympics when douglashuang beat me 1040 to 1037 (0.3% more points)!

I would have liked to have done this again, but I discovered it too late. Sad

The awards ceremony will be held tomorrow.

Congratulations, Husker!

So, on the medals stand, the band will be playing, hmm, the Nebraska Cornhuskers' fight song, the Mexican National Anthem and The Star-Spangled Banner in Latin?

Good game, all, and big thanks to our wonderful announcer and scorekeeper! Lotsa fun. Smile

Time for a little analysis fellows:

Husker played on the safe side, and it payed for him.
Fbaezer made a huge mistake, with the last time Kostelic and the nation Croatia (that's what happens when you rely on a couple of stars and not a real strong team).
George played quite fine, with solid choices, but left Russia or Canada unnatended.
Ossobuco's tem was strong... only not enough. Had the Italians really taken advantage of home field...
Jp would have won... if he'd chosen Austria and its 73 points.
Jespah bet for women, and they deceived her: the Americans, but mostly the Norwegians.

I am late, so I don't expect to be counted. But I cannot resist but to pitch in my two cents:

Group A
Russia, Canada, USA Men

Group B
Switzerland, Austria, Sweden

Group C
Australia, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Estonia

Don't count me in. I just want to put this down for the record.

The Winter Olympics had already run for seven days, when Fanstasy Summer Olympics champion douglashuang pitched his two cents.
It was an almost perfect prediction (390 points, the maximum being 392): the only mistake: chosing Great Britain instead of Japan.
On his behalf we must say Canada didn't show its real strenght until the second week of the games.

Fbaezer~
Thanks for all your work in putting this together and then faithfully
updating the standings. It made the Winter Olympics much more fun to
follow.
~George

(I'll be voting for the Samba Kings on your WC thread.)

I discovered it late too. You should have put in your predition for the record also. Who knows, maybe this time you would have beaten me, unofficially, by 0.3%.

I am interested in doing it for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Hope to see all of you later.
