Once again, my name is not "big guy." I'm finding your remarks about "catching up" tedious, the more so as i consider your thinking demonstrates you to be a supremely backward person.

It this is not an issue in Louisiana, this is a mental jerking-off--but i expect little different from fantatically religious people, and especially someone who says she did not "approve" of homosexuality before she found Hey-Zeus . . .

And I'm not telling you to vote one way or the other, either. I'm just answering the question that YOU POSED here... Laughing

You wouldn't have a problem if your right to abstain from voting was at risk and we just whistled and sat on our hands and didn't do anything about it -- when we could uphold your right?

And then the vote happens and you no longer have the right to abstain from voting and it's because we whistled and sat on out hands?

No problem?

OK.

Perhaps the original question should have been does everyone have the right to abstain on a vote... period.

Then, the issue of why could have been explained later.

Probably would have played out differently at the beginning but the same at the end. ;-)

"seem to", followed by a clarifying question. What exactly is the problem? That's how it seems (shall I collect evidence?).

If her position is merely "I would abstain from such a vote and I don't care what anyone thinks about it", why didn't this thread end long ago?

She seems to care.

That would have made for a clearer thread, probably, Intrepid, you're right.

I do think everyone has the right to abstain.

The question becomes whether it is ethical to do so -- I'd say it becomes less ethical the higher the stakes.

You abstain from voting when you're not sure which way to vote. What's the problem? A non-vote is neither support nor denial.
I do believe that gay people are discriminted against by current marriage laws. But I also believe that government should get out of the business of marrying people altogether. I would, therefore, abstain from voting, as well.

And mine is not MOAN. Surely you do not expect me to abide by your wishes and you will not respect mine? Uh, am I feeling a bit of your superiority coming out there cupcake? Honey, if it's tedious, take a nap.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Does this mean that every thread you have started.................I think you get my drift. Lighten up! Life's too dang short to be so cranky all the time!

The problem is the implication behind the preceding statement.

What is ludicrous is that MOAN has started a thread on this "issue" (it is not) and sucked so many people in.

In another thread, MOAN contended that granting to homosexuals all of the civil rights accorded to adults would diminish her civil rights. Challenged to show how this were so, this lame "voting issue" is the best she could come up with. Since then, she has beating this horse to death--although it was dead on arrival.

She has said that she did not "approve" of homosexuality before she became a fanatical christian--so protestations on her part that she is not a homophobe ring pretty hollow from where i stand. She acknowledges that there is no referendum on homosexual marriage in Louisiana, so it costs her nothing to be smug and portray herself as tolerant when she doesn't actually have to put her money where her big mouth is.

I can't believe she's dragged all of y'all into this.

echi's position has some logic to it, especially if applied universally. (If there was a vote for whether every single male over the age of 30 would be married to the single female over 30 whose name appeared closest to his in the phone book, you'd also abstain?)

I know, Set. I was trying to get something in about the continuing "compromise" trope, as it spans so many discussions, then there were so many batty and easily refuted statements that I got into refuting them.

But I gotta get going, see ya.

Would these be forced marriages?

There's a big difference here, Intrepid, which i suspect you're unable to understand. I'm not attempting to argue against MOAN's inane statements--i'm here pointing out that she's peddling horsie poop . . .

(it's a thought experiment, echi. for your position to hold logically and not just be a reaction to this specific situation, it'd have to hold true across a variety of "I would abstain because the government shouldn't have anything to do with marriage" situations.)

(but I'm actually going... bye!!!)
