However, my wife's side of the family has royalty in their background.
Thanks for the great links, Joe, Walter, and ehBeth!

The closest my family has come to royalty was great grand uncle Chesters poker hand with 5 kings. They shot him for it !

when i saw jw's entry about the book his father published , i did a quick google for 'wandel' .
here is one of the pictures that popped up ; it must be a german cartoon from about 1900 .
inscription : "a baby-carriage no longer necessary" (a comment on the long dresses worn by ladies).
i wonder if jw is riding on his mum's dress ? hbg
That reminds me of my childhood, hamburger.
I wish you and your family were coming to the Chicago gathering. My father's book is out-of-print but I myself have an autographed copy and will show it to anyone interested in German immigration.
Fascinating reading. Johnboy won't tell the story about how his immigrant great great etc grandmother came to the US with her infant child in order to join her husband who was in, of all places, Chicago. The stage coach carrying her, another mother and another infant, crashed, killing everyone except one of the children, whom neither father had ever seen. Rightly or wrongly, the child was given to him.
Johnboy will be arriving in Chicago, not by stagecoach but via Delta, at O'Hare @ 9 am on 5/5; leaving at 1 pm on 5/8.
If that approximates anyone else's schedule, please let me know.
evenin' , jw :
since we will only be returning from a five week trip in late april, we'll need a bit of a breather .
the old joints aren't as flexible any more as they used to be ...
mrs h and i were in chicago twice during the1980's - we sure had a good time . since i was on 'expense account' , we stayed at the drake hotel - a little old-fashioned but great service .
i remember that one morning we had breakfast at the 'playboy club' ! of course , we mailed postcards to all our friends telling them that we were visiting the playboy club - didn't tell them we were just having breakfast .
we were there during one of the jazz-weekends by the lakeshore , lots of good jazz, blues and one evening 'skitch henderson' with his big band - kind of dates me , i think .
wishing all of you a great time in chicago ! hbg
Just bookmarking to keep it on my first page.
Hmm, we seem to have strayed pretty far from "just the facts" on this thread!
I'm more definite than ever. I bought a plane ticket today. Arriving Fri 5/5 at 1:30, departing Sun 5/7 at 7pm.
Summing up my previous "just the facts" posts:
Official City of Chicago information (events, maps, general stuff)

Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau (more info on things to do and see)
Chicago Transit Authority (buses, el/subway maps, information)
Information on airports (including terminal maps, ground transportation)

I have just added the contents of that post to the first post in this topic. Thank you.
PS There's no need to keep bumping up this topic. If there's no news on it, then bumping does nothing but send people meaningless updates. Might I suggest that interested parties only add to this topic if they have something meaningful to add re the gathering, and chat on the other topic? Many thanks.

May 4 - ci arrives. I will depart on May 9. I believe Walter arrives on May 5.

I arrive on the 4th as well - but after 14 hours in planes (and on airports), I'm sure that I don't go out in the evening.
I'll leave on Monday at noon.
Putting all my info together:
Arriving Fri 5/5 at 1:30, departing Sun 5/7 at 7pm.
Just made a reservation at the Days Inn Lincoln Park North. (Same as O'Bill.)
Arriving Thurs May 4 around noon, leaving Monday, May 8th around 6 pm.
So far Walter and I are signed up for an architecture bus tour on Friday at 9:30 a.m. A bunch of us are discussing meeting at the Art Institute on Saturday at 10 a.m. (at the lion to the right as you face the building). Back with links.
Here's the architecture tour Walter found. I think at least three of us are taking it on Friday morning, May 5th. They offer it on Sat and Sunday too. My price as a senior was $32. I think it is $37. for non-seniors. It's a 3 1/2 hour tour.

Here's the start of the most recent discussion on the art museum, ending up with some of us meeting at 10 a.m. on Sat.
