Horrible piece of WC football we saw today. Theres nothing worse for the spectators to see the "italianization" of fearfull teams on late stages. But, Portugal didn't have merits to win the game, and although I do like them, their diving really nagged me.

Now, I must wonder what a final with the defensive italians in one side, and a team that plays with only one man on front.

Is beautifull football dead?

Desperately trying not to take sides.....

I was amused by the French coach at one point miming using a film camera....

The British press is not very kind to Cristiano Ronaldo this morning.

I thought he played very well, btw.

I'm crying.

I will be happy if either Italy or France win. I didn't see the France v. Portugal game, or I might be leaning toward Italy (based on nimh's take which I usually agree with). If France come out like they did against Spain and Brazil, I will have to go for them. They just have such a strong midfield with several players who can score pretty much whenever they want. Plus, I'm in love with Zidane. But I like Italy too, so if they win, so be it. And second place isn't a bad note to retire on.

I would prefer France to win. Though on their performance last night, or rather the bit I saw of it, they played a very dangerous game with Portugal. Sitting back and holding on. Great thing was the French penalty looked like a dive to me by Henry. So ha Portugal, a taste of your own medicine. And tears for Ronaldo...who petulantly said he liked being booed. What a spoiled adolescent.

Okay, predictions:

Germany to win easily, and France to be champions. Or maybe Italy.

No, France, 2-1.

He cheats and dives like otherwise only Figo does.

Everyone cheats and dives. I really don't get the vitrol I've seen from you on this subject.... the difference in the amount of diving and all between teams just isn't that great to be so worked up.

In the game between them and the Dutch I thought both sides played a pretty dirty game (e.g the Dutch dishonourably did not kick the ball out of bounds when a player was down, as is tradition) but you tend to go on and on with your caustic national stereotypes only against certain nations. <shrugs>

I've been wondering about all that, observer without tv that I am. Not only without tv, but without much history, that is, sans nada. I've been all too ready to read of diving re italy, being aware to start with that italy is never perfect, but I've been a bit nonplussed at the effulgent vitriol..

Is diving a cultural thing? a tactic? I know I'm clueless, but it seemed to me that more than italy did it.

Some nations have reputations for being dirtier than others, and I don't really disagree with the stereotypes I've seen in here.

It's just that the difference in sportsmanship is simply not marked enough to be so vitrolent about. The Portuguese team is playing a more blue-collar game than some others but it's not like everyone else is a bunch of saints. Ever

The Portuguese/Dutch game was a pretty sorry display of sportsmanship on both sides. But nimh says he's happy when the Dutch "finally" play rough but has nothing but expletives for some teams. Very un-nimh! Shocked

I suspect that folks have different apprehensions of their own sportsmanship. Takes a whale of maturity to see beyond the window...
