Well, I don't know about all that ... but he's got mad skilz.

You're damn right. Given the chance, I would so jump his bones.

I'm a soccer fan, but drama and late calls make the game silly.

I'll take American football with replay anyday over the reffing I've seen in the World Cup (and I'm a FIFA certified ref).

Nope. Replay breaks up the game and takes away the human element and the spontanaeity. Soccer is what it is because it is a free flowing game. I do think things like red cards or anything resulting in a suspension should be reversed after the fact if the replay shows innocence, but everything else is just part of the game. Can you imagine how long a soccer match would be with instant replay after every foul holding up the ref's decision? And who the hell would watch such a low scoring sport if it were chopped up like that? We might as well watch penalty kicks all day.

Thanks for your support nimh but was it prompted by English football skills or disgust for one C Ronaldo? (did you notice the wink to the Portugese bench after Rooney was sent off...what was that all about?)

But McTag is right we never looked like we deserved to go further in the competition.

all I ever wanted was some ENTERTAINMENT from England. Someone said on radio this morning that they looked like they were running on 'empty'.

There was no joy. Hardly anyone smiled. It was just hard work..and torture to watch. (I know this is the world cup and not a local kick around, but why play or watch it if it ain't fun?...which of course prompts the obvious and depressing answer..money).

For top flight professional footballers, there is too much football. Jack Charlton got the best out of the Irish side by insisting they practice set pieces and NOTHING else between games. The body needs time to relax and recover. Every time we saw pictures of the England team in Germany they were working hard at training, and that after a long season for most of them.

Meanwhile in the World Cup Shopping competition the England WAGS (wives and girlfriends) excelled themselves.

In the end it all dissolved in to farce.

Euro 2006? Ok I see what you mean. I would like to see a France Germany final and Germany win 2:1. One thing is for sure though, Greece won't be there. Smile

I think, others didn't do differently, and the season for the European teams was as long.

As an aside, but important, I think: I'm really pleased that nothing serious happened with and from the fans and the so-called supporters!

Disappointed but not surprised Sad

I honestly thought Portugal were, in an overall context, quite poor. In that same line of thought, so too were England but at least we actually looked like scoring after being reduced to 10 men. What did the portugese do in that game other than pass it from side to side and occasionally into the box for 120 minutes, very little. France I have to say, with Zidane and Ribery were magical at times and it was a pleasure to see Zidane show Brazil how it's done (see the little dink over Ronaldo's head  ).

I'm not a fan of Christiano Ronaldo, as a player he can be great (he can also be very poor) but his conduct in that game was poor at best. The BBC showed some footage from the start of the game of him and Pauleta seemingly trying to wind Rooney up and I suspect that was what the wink was possibly all about, we've done it, he's lost it, he's off etc. The diving will always annoy, I'm not sure what you can say about it to be honest.

England need a better manager with some balls, Beckham has resigned as captain and his place in the 1st team is surely in doubt for the future with the likes of Lennon and Wright-Philips but we'll see. The rest of the world cup has been wonderful, teams get beat all the time, hell the reigning champions and many people's favourites are both out as well, I'd just like to see England go out with all guns blazing for once. I honestly felt we were the better side once Rooney was off but penalties again, ugh, what's the point? Regardless of who won or lost, given the players in the squad, a better performance from England for football fans in general should have been displayed throughout the WC I guess.

Although, the relatively new ticker, gets a rest now that we're out, you know, it's actually a little stressful watching England sometimes...

Good post Ashers.

[I understand that Frank Warren is interested in the rights to the Ronaldo/Rooney fight scheduled to take place on the first day of pre season training at Manchester United...that is if Ronaldo hasn't run off to Real Madrid]

Quote:
In Harlesden, north London, the mood was celebratory as jubilant Portuguese fans drove up and down the high street cheering, and waving flags from their cars.

But in Bolton, Greater Manchester, up to 500 drunken football fans attacked police in a major disturbance.

Police say they were overwhelmed by the trouble which lasted for around two and a half hours.

Twelve people were arrested but no-one was injured.
The small Portuguese population on the island of Jersey was attacked. But it does seem that English fans in Germany were reasonably well behaved considering a) the heat b) the beer c) the numbers d) the result.

Hah! Well, disgust with the Portuguese played a major role, of course, yeah. When the tournament started I didnt have much up with England yet.

But there was another big thing too: the English fans. They've been great. Wherever more than a couple of them showed up in front of a big screen in Budapest, they made it into an event. Cheering and hooting and, last night, singing, waving the flag even for Ivory Coast, and always supplying rapid-fire witty and eh, florid, running commentaries on the game at hand that noone Dutch, German or Hugarian would be able to halfway match -- they're unique. Add those two fan vids that someone posted here (Vindaloo and 3 Lions), and you just got an infectiously witty and passionate league you just cant refuse.

It'll be boring without them, now Sad . Next time, I want England to reach the finals (and lose against Holland).

A car broke 1 1/2 hour ago through the barriers of the so-called fan-mile near the Brandburg Gate in Berlin.

About 20 persons were injured; the driver (33) and a female were arrested.

Speculation now go from a bomb attack to .... whatever.

There's a big screen, and on days without football, other things happen there, like tonight, a concert with the German Symphony Orchestra under Ingo Metzmacher.

Could it be that there weren't many English fans in Budapest?
In Germany the English hooligans did slash out, but luckily not everywhere

Nimh, you poor lost soul!

I've been reading this thread and, although I know nothing about football (soccer) I can spot a whinner and a cheater when I see one!

Absents are always in the wrong and you take advantage of it!

Give me the worst players of the countries you bashed and will not exchange one of them for you!

I'm really pissed off that you can use your English skills to do such miserable job! Evil or Very Mad

Eh ... huh??

Whats your problem? Are you still upset about the other time we clashed in a thread (for the first time tho it was)?

Only country Ive bashed is Portugal. And with good reason - though if like you say you know nothing about football, you wouldnt know, of course.

Congratulations on the French team though. They played great against Brazil, and clearly deserved to win too, I cheered for 'em. Now they play beautiful football, like it's supposed to be played.

Ive already sung the praises of Zidane's looks, but like Tico says, of course he's got mad skills too, and thats more important. His last goal against Spain was brilliant like I said before, and now against Brazil too he was fabulous.

Pity Brazil and France couldnt both go to the semi-finals. I'd take them over Portugal or Italy any time.

Hey, Francis - in short - if you dont know anything about football, dont go apeshit about people who do care, and who get upset when a team makes a travesty of the game, 'k? Cause thats what Portugal did. I'm hardly alone in thinking so, just read the reviews in the press.

The problem is you are a cheater, Nimh!

Even though I dont know nothing about football, and about Portugal's players for that matter, I can see you are bashing a Latin country, along with Argentina and Italy, and treating them cheaters just beacause your team have been set out of the WC.

I think it's because the inherent racism you displayed a couple of times.

Now you can always use your so prided English skills to counter my opinion but it still be there.

But remember my nights are longer than 90 minutes and are more beautiful than your days...

Whinner!

Wow, thats far out.

If my "inherent racism" made me hate Latin countries, how do you explain I love the football of France and Brazil? Those are Latin too. I liked Spain too.

Argentina and Italy have bad names in football. Have you seen what Lord Ellpus, or was it Steve, wrote about them in this thread?

Are they motivated by "inherent racism" too, then? Or is it only racism when I complain about those teams?

You say you dont know anything about football. So dont even pretend to be able to judge why football watchers love one team, and loathe another.

The teams I love and loathe are pretty much evenlly distributed between Latin, Germanic, African and what not countries.

You'd better show me where racism comes into it, if you're going to launch such serious accusations.

All of my working life so far, and all of that of my late mother, has been in the sign of anti-racism and promoting minority rights. So I take that accusation very seriously.
