I think Jurgen Klinsmann can speak gooder English than most. Certainly than most British footballers, football pundits and hangers-on, wouldn't you agree, milord?

I think Klose dived to get that Pole sent off. Disappointing. But the German team played well. I slept through the first half, unfortunately.

Any trouble in Nuremberg yet?

Since he lives since a couple of years in the USA (he just stays a few days in Germany - got a lot media uproar about this), it's actually more American, what he speaks than English

Lived in America for two years?

I'm worried now.......he may have learnt a thing or two from the yanquis about how to play football.

McT, do you think he enrolled Klose into the Klinsmann school of diving?

Ellpus, old bean!

I just have to say I'm surprised at the lengths your family have gone to - just to get away from you!

Are there any, apart from your old mum, who remain in the Old Dart?

You must be the brother from hell!

My favorite part was when the Saudi's got down on their knees in a circle and told the Tunisian fans to kiss their heiny

Around 180 polish and german "hooligans" detained in a so called "minor incident" in Dortmund. Judging by the video clip in the news, it seemed quite a mess to me!

Before the match, 120 were arrested - altogether 300 in Dortmund.

You've got me thinking now, Margo.

From early childhood, It was quite often the case that my little passport went missing, just before the family buggered off on foreign holidays.
My froggie brother has apparently sent umpteen letters to me, in order to let me know his address....and every single one of 'em have gone missing in the post.
When I went in search of my sisters in Perth, one of 'em quickly buggered off to Tasmania (or so she tells me), and the other made sure that I was thoroughly sprayed with antibacterial aerosol before I was even let off the plane.
Come to think of it, that particular sister (Kanya....an old family name) even dropped the "Ellpus" when she married, unheard of before now. The women of the female variety usually do the "double barrell" route.
Mind you, she DID marry someone with an unusual surname, and probably wanted to avoid being called Kanya Ellpus-Findcock for the rest of her life.

Hmmm.........

Interesting online poll in the German football magazine 'Kicker' (15,300 voters so far)

Which team did you like best?

    Germany 29,98% Cote d'Ivoire 20,75% Argentinia 13,21% Czechia 11,26% Trinidad & Tobago 6,21%

......."All of which chimes with a recent survey which claimed that two-thirds of Scots have no intention of cheering for England in the World Cup, despite Gordon Brown's attempts to curry UK unity by voicing his support for Beckham and co.
It appears the majority, some of whom have snapped up T-shirts bearing the slogan: "I support 2 teams Scotland and anybody playing England' would rather follow the example of Jack McConnell, Scotland's First Minister.
When asked last month whether he would be supporting England, Mr McConnell said: "No, I will not. Scotland is not there and that's disappointing. And there are people who think that, as First Minister, I should automatically support England instead. But football is not about politics, so I will not be........................"

I always scratch my head when I see and hear this sort of stuff going on with some (well, it would seem the majority) of the Scots. There is always a bit of banter going on between rival teams/countries etc. when it comes to sports, but IMO the Scots really do themselves no favours when they act in this way.
I don't know about the other Brits on this thread, but when Scotland are ever involved in major football tournaments (rare, I know...but bear with me) I really get behind them and cheer the place down when they score a goal....unless they are playing England, of course.
Personally, I absolutely love it when ANY country from Great Britain do well in sports tournaments.

Oh well.............maybe it's sour grapes or something. I'm still mystified (and a tad saddened) though.

The fact is, people everywhere - it's not just the English - support the underdog. Four years ago, lunchtime pub-dwelling skivers in London jumped for joy when Senegal beat France. We certainly knew who we wanted to win last night in the grudge match between Germany and Poland.

Nah....I don't go with the "underdog" theory in this particular scenario, Walter. Even if England were playing Brazil or Germany, the Scots would still cheer when an England player skies it over the bar at the penalty shoot out.

Reading your first article (comments section) it would appear that the Scots seem to hate the "English" media, as much as anything else.
Rupert Murdoch didn't have an English Passport, last time I asked him.

Oh well........

I always remember 1966, when I watched that - he may roast in hell, that Rusisan linesman - match together with some Scots and English: for just a couple of minutes the Scottish remembered what was written on their passports, 85 minutes they were supporting me.

An interesting take is to look at the market value of the various teams.

(First figure actual team, second the complete Championship squad - all in million EUROs)

    Czechia 99/128.3 Germany 131/177.2 Argentina 147,5/228.3 Netherlands 149,5/207 Portugal 166.8/235.4 France 190.8/280 Spain 227.5/337.3 Italy 251/377.5 England 256.4/343,7 Brasilia 262,5/373.7
