I only saw the last 20 mins or so of Brazil:Croatia - possibly Croatia was knackered by that time, but they seemed to be completely overwhelmed

Years ago I read something in Sports Ilustrated that explained why "soccer" - urgh - didn't interest the american public.

I might have the article folded in the middle of a book, however, I did find something fresh about the author, Frank Deford, and his unfortunate opinions on THE Beautiful Game. Smile

Passion of the Cup

Will look for it.

Hey Walter, how are our boys ("fans") behaving in Nuernberg? There were some distasteful scenes of English fans (in Frankfurt I think) shown on our ITV News this evening.

[Channel 5 this morning, pretty female presenter, spoke about "Frankfart"]

Well, I'm glad there have been no problems reported so far.....

There are some English bobbies on the beat there, helping out, I hear.

Apparently, you've got the Scots to thank for all this...

Brazil was damn lucky. Croatia deserved at least a draw. After yesterday's game Brazil are "a bit less" favourite for everyone I think.

I hope so. If Australia could pull off a draw against them, it would be a dream. I'm not thinking about the possibility of winning. It's still Brazil after all.

Geez, even I can appreciate that fourth goal from Spain. That was a thing of beauty.

I'm told that red card was undeserved. Anyone know the scoop on that?

It was a yellow, but not a red. A slight tug on the shorts. It was also outside the penalty area (he obviously let go beforehand), but the referee deemed it to be inside. The attacker went down, but there didn't seem to be any contact when he went down. Even the guy who went down seemed a bit apologetic to him, with a pat on the back.

So Ukraine wasn't playing a man down in the second half then? I'm not watching today, so I have all secondhand information.

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I thought it DESERVED a yellow, but it got a red. Yes they were down a man for almost all the second half.

I got my teutonic fix today as I went into town where there is a German market in the main square at the moment and I got my pint (not a litre, unfortunately) of wheat beer and sat listening to oompah music and if I closed my eyes, I could easily have been in Nuremberg soaking up the carnival, WM-laden atmosphere....bliss.

How do you suppose the Poles will go against the home country this evening?
These Polish names are a commentator's nightmare, btw

Szepan, Kuzorra, Tyburski, Kalwitzki, Tilkowski, Sawitzki etc etc - all famous German internationals from the past (and Klose and Podolski from today's team are born in Poland)

I've just seen again Frings goal from the first match. Brilliant. Amazing. Best goal yet imho.

If Germany play well against Poland tonight, I would think the odds on them winning the tournament will shorten considerably.

Brazil didnt look up to much...for Brazil.

Argentina looked good to me, also Czechs.

And er whats that other team from the Iberian peninsula, you know the team with tremendous footballing pedigree, and perenial failures...oh yes Spain. Whumped Ukraine this afternoon..

Is it Spain's time this year?...no.

Spain's 4th goal is THE most impressive goal in a collective play so far. Great Puyol.
