Thanks, boomer.

This has actually been SO much better than last winter, in sum; if our luck changes now, I feel better equipped to handle it, if nothing else. More resources, more hope for spring not being TOO far away.

Still hoping this will be another brief one, so far so good. Knock on wood.

I'm knocking on wood and hoping this episode is a fast one. Can you both get a nap in this afternoon?

Hee hee!

You know one of the first things I thought, after the immediate crisis mode was over?

"Hey, maybe this means I got the job!" (The whole health vs. prosperity angle...) (I STILL don't know, and am getting to the point where if they're so lax about this kind of thing I dunno if I WANT to work there... but even I recognize that as a rationalization. ;-)

She's up to popsicles now... thanks for the crossed fingers and good wishes.

Soon we're gonna watch "The Princess Bride" together for the first time ever -- I can't imagine a movie she'd love more, so that should be fun.

hi soz ! sorry to hear that the sozlet had another setback .
we went to see our physician last week - he wants us to come in once a month for blood-pressure check etc. - and he wasn't feeling well himself . he had been flat on his back for a week with backspasms - not for the first time. he told us there are quite a few "low level" virus infections going around that are showing up in strange ways - appearing, disappearing and so on (he even thinks that his backspasms might be caused or aggravated by a virus).
i know that some of our pool-buddies have ben absent - some for 2-3 weeks - with what one might called "unspecified" ailments(which means the doctor told them to rest, drink plenty of fluids and take some tylenol).
from what i understand, these virus infections are generally not life-threatening but are certainly a nasty nuisance and almost imposible to track down.
i don't think this is of any direct help to you, just thought you might be interested to know that if it is a virus infection that's knocking the sozlet out , you could gently probe your physician to find out what his opinion his.
wishing all of you "speedy" recovery ! hbg

Unfortunately, it's pretty standard for kids in preschool to get sick, often. Preschool and daycare are pretty much the single most germy/ at-risk environments. Nobody (her doctor, ENT, etc.) seems to be surprised that she's getting sick as often as she does, it's more about severity.

This is shaping up to be another brief one, thank goodness!!!! (Knock on wood.) She's had juice, broth, and cheerios, and wants more. (Taking it slow.) Keeping things down since 4:30 AM. Peeing et al. (As in, not dehydrated.)

The Princess Bride was an enormous hit. It really is a masterpiece. Maddeningly, it wasn't captioned (it was a DVD, with non-standard "subtitle" options -- apparently you could only get English subtitles if you had it playing [voice] in Spanish. Great.) but I remembered enough of it to follow along. Actually I had some gaps, for any junkies out there -- why does Wallace Shawn kidnap Buttercup in the first place? And what was the trick with the poisoned wine? (Cary Elwes had been building up an immunity and put the poison in both cups?)

Her hair is all cleaned up which was an enormous job -- never so close to deciding heck with it and chopping it all off. (Her hair is really long now, about waist length when wet [it's curly so seems shorter when dry]). Did the tedious combing while she watched, that worked well.

The job is one I really really want and thought I had a good chance at but they're taking forever to get back to me which doesn't seem to be a good sign. <fatalistic sigh>

hi again !
did a google on low level virus infection and the first item listed was this online diagnostic tool. i have no idea if it is of any real value or if it even some kind of scheme to pull money out of people's pockets.
i have heard on a number of news-programs that more and more people do their own basic research online. recently a well-respected canadian heart-specialist was interviewed on tv-ontario (ontario's PBS) and he said that he often asks his patients to do some research before seeing them for a follow-up(he might specify some parameters). he stated that he can't possibly be up-to-date on everything and that he needs the patients help in the diagnostic process.
perhaps someone has made use of on-line diagnostic services ? it would be interesting to hear from anyone having used such service . hbg

here is the website (it's there even thoug it looks a little short)
...ON_

Vinzinni kidnaps Buttercup to start a war between Guilder and Florin.

He tears a patch of a Guilder uniform, tucks it into the horse's saddle thinking that Humperdink will see the badge and start a war with Guilder to get Buttercup back.

But, if I remember correctly, Humperdink is really behind the kidnap plot because he wants the war started so he can snatch the land in Guilder and he doesn't really care what happens to Buttercup.

As to the poison - there is poison in both cups and Wesley has made himself impervious to the poison.

I love this movie! A few years back AnnOverboard convinced me to read the book. The book is absolutely amazing.

Saw a little girl at the pool yesterday with earplugs because she has tubes in her ears, reminded me that I'd wanted to give a general update:

School's over, summer's here, and I think it's safe to say that this year went WAY better than last year!! Sozlet had two major illnesses (the one-two ear infections with burst eardrums around Halloween, and the barfing/ dehydration at the beginning of December) and one minor one (detailed a few posts back, from January) -- but that was it. No more ear infections, and no more barfing, the WHOLE rest of the school year. She did get colds, but they were normal-person colds -- she'd get stuffy, she'd blow her nose a lot, and then she'd get better. That's it.

Whew!

She'll be exposed to a whole bunch more new germs when she starts kindergarten next year, so we'll see. But as of now I'm really happy with the decision to NOT go with tubes. She did have those extra two ear infections (one in each ear), but as her ENT said, if we'd gotten tubes in January of '05, it would've been the same total trauma to her eardrum (holes either way), but the tubes would've created much bigger holes that would take a lot longer to heal, whereas the eardrum perforations she had were tiny and healed very quickly.

Here's hoping we're over the worst of it, and the winter from hell was anomalous, due to the combination of moving and a barrage of new preschool germs.

Glad to hear this year was so much better than last and that your decision re: the tubes turned out so well. Here's hoping she's grown out of the worst of it and that kindergarten is not as contagious as preschool.

Soz--

Great news.

When she starts kindergarten her immune system will probably have manufactured antibodies for the most common local ailments.

Motherhood does get easier, doesn't it?

Swimpy--

I'd rather have a teenage kid pointing out my flaws than an innocent baby wailing and refusing to tell me what's wrong.

I've got control issues.

This thing has proved to be extremely useful, so updating it:

Sozlet didn't get enough sleep Sunday night, and was kind of tetchy when I was getting her ready for school. Wasn't very hungry (but she did eat), complained of a bit of a tummy ache (but didn't insist). No fever, and her eyes seemed fine (she gets tell-tale "sick eyes" when there are problems), so I sent her off to school.

About an hour and a half into it I got an email from the school secretary, with the subject, "[Sozlet]'s fine." Uh-oh. The secretary said that sozlet had come to the office complaining of a tummy ache and was resting in the nurse's office. No fever. Just an FYI -- sozlet planned to rest and then go back to class.

Then came the, "she's just not feeling better" email. Went to go pick her up.

Got there and she'd just barfed. Burning up.

Brought her home, gave her Motrin, took her temp. (102.) Arranged her with soft towels and pillows on the family room floor to watch some TV. Gave her ice chips. She perked up. Eventually she said she wanted to take a nap and rolled over and conked out for an hour. MUCH perkier when she woke up, to the point where I thought that was it, just one little blip. She worked her way through ice chips and popsicles to a bit of banana and some crackers over the course of several hours.

Then came another downturn. Shaky, hot, nauseous. Barfed again. I gave her an ibuprofren suppository since she wasn't keeping Motrin down.

Looked up this thread, was grateful, as it's highly parallel to what happened January 13th. Also, E.G. was all for giving her the anti-emetic and I told him to read the side effects before doing so based on what I wrote here in Jan. He did and said eek scary no. (There are possible breathing side effects that make it a bad idea for overnight. Basically you have to do it when you can then WATCH the kid continuously. A pharmacist E.G. talked to said it was bad news -- use it if you HAVE to.)

Anyway, started getting things ready for bed, she barfed a couple of more times in that interval. Very hot. Gave her another suppository, eventually she fell asleep, with me propped up at the end of the bed so I could feel if she moved (also based on re-reading the Jan 13th [a Friday!] post and remembering how awful it was to go in and see her lying there crying with barf everywhere -- was going to stay close by this time).

At about 3:00 AM she was moving and I checked on her, she felt much hotter. Gave her another suppository -- it wouldn't stay. She said she had to poop. Put her on the potty, she got the chills and then had to barf. Sigh. Got the suppository in eventually, and she went back to sleep.

As of 9 AM she was much cooler and sleeping soundly and hadn't barfed again -- now I'm focused on keeping her asleep for a good long time, and getting her re-hydrated when she wakes up. (I was pushing ice chips throughout and she peed twice during the barfiest phase, both pretty normal looking.)

Poor kid.

Aw crap, I swear my thought rays wake her up. Literally the minute I pressed "submit," she appeared.

Her temp is GREAT, eyes don't look so good, wish she'd slept more (but she got a pretty good chunk). Hopefully fluids + nutrition will finish perking her up.
