Dys, there's always tomorrow. (I'm surprised -- shocked, actually -- that no mods have upbraided me for that "little sheet-head" post above).

They just may be bright enough to comprehend irony.

You never know.

The latest on the story..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/4387086.stm

Quote:
West Midlands Police is warning that anyone found acting violently this weekend will be dealt with severely.

To date 24 people have been arrested, including three on suspicion of murder, after the disturbances last Saturday.

One man was killed and 35 other people were injured in the violence. Another man shot near to the scenes also died.

Supt Tom Coughlan said: "These are a small number of people who have been hellbent on causing problems in that particular community.

"We have sufficient police resources responding to information and intelligence to deal with that situation and my message is if you are intent to go out and cause problems this week then you'll be dealt with very robustly by the police."

Radio closed down

The rioting in the Lozells area of the city involved youths from the black and Asian communities.

It was said to have been sparked by a claim that a black girl of 14 had been raped.

The pirate radio station accused of broadcasting the so far unsubstantiated rumour has voluntarily closed down....

and...

Quote:
West Midlands Police investigating the murder of a 23-year-old man during riots in Birmingham have arrested two more men.

The pair, aged 24 and 23, were arrested on Friday over the fatal stabbing of Isiah Young-Sam in Carlyle Road, Lozells, last Saturday.

Three others suspects - two aged 22 and one 25 - are still being questioned.

The rioting in the Lozells area of the city involved youths from the black and Asian communities.

Police said the men were being held "on suspicion of murder and serious assault". http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/4387848.stm

J_B,

What puzzles me is the vast difference in so many countries concerning things.

Like in Aruba, I don't understand why a stronger stance wasn't taken with the suspect and his father, a judge, to get to the truth.

And now, in the above case, such extremes.

You refer with that to the Birmingham riots? And - if 'yes' - what excactly puzzles you? What are the extremes?

Well, I guess referring or relating it is a bit of a stretch.

What I meant was, it just seems that certain things are taken to extremes. Yes, violence was the reason for this extreme in Birminham and they were trying to head it off. I understand that.

What I don't understand is Aruba being what "seems," and I say seems because we can't really know because we aren't there, so lax in their trying to get to the truth.

I understand they are under Dutch law there and I don't know much about that. But, I also know of a case here in Louisiana, which I happen to be personally involved in, that the DA and the police know someone is involved but because the person is reluctant to give a statement, they don't push it.

I didn't mean to get off topic. It was just something that crossed my mind I was curious about.

As an aside as well: Aruba doesn't only have Dutch law but is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Well, I haven't been to Birmingham (recently) either, but the media coverage both from Aruba as well as from the Midlands is about the same (especially considering the population [71,566 vs. 977,087]).

You mean the spewers of the term "ragheads," and the phrase "Palestinan vermin?"

Lash and Finn d'Abuzz, respectively.

Yes. I called terrorists towelheads. I've called them much worse. Some people communicated to me that they think that term alone is a catch-all insult for everyone of Arab ancestry. I made it quite clear to anyone who was actually interested in the truth, that that was not how I used the word, but as I said---people who want to see offense, will.

I also doubt Finn meant to include all Palestinians in his remark, though I am not speaking for him.

It irritates me that people no longer care what someone means by what they say--

I think towelhead is on par with honky. It's incredibly mild. Of course, that's my opinion.

Lash,

Personally, I didn't think anything negative about your use of towelheads. I kind of liken it to the term redneck.

Yeah: re rednecks.

I don't understand why some are so earthshattering and others are OK. I don't like the disparity.

I know what you mean. Always between a rock and a hard place. It is just so hard to get tone across sometimes in these posts. Often others read them with a completely different meaning. If we were talking face to face there would probably not be as much diversion.

Bodily language, facial expressions, etc., are always useful in a conversation.

If you think that, you know less about this country than I thought.

All the good guys wear white, the bad guys wear black, everybody stands in neat little labelled groups in your world.
