Unbelievable. One is justifying the use of racial epithets by saying people just don't understand what he meant. Others are nodding and saying, "Yeah, I can see that."

Everyone knows what is meant by raghead, towelhead, redneck, honky, etc. When we get into "degrees" of epithets, we are jerking ourselves around.

There isn't any socially acceptable racial epithet, even though the more "patriotic" of us tried to sneak some in because of 9/11.

Er, Setanta has discussed that here, when railing against Intrepid's use of the word.

You either have a very good memory, or you are a student of ancient history. So Setanta and I had a discussion on this once. Do you feel a necessity to attach my name to the current discussion? Just curious. No ill intent.

I remember that because it affected my own sense of the word redneck. I was too lazy to go hunt for a quote of Set's point of view to give a link. Not meant as an aspersion, simply context of who was discussing it.

Next time I feel a need to reference a comprehensive quote that relates to a discussion I'll go look for the quote, and then people can read the quote in context.

I'll add that Set knows he rails on occasion, though I shouldn't have used that word either. His 'railing' that day helped me learn.

Ok, I have to apologize. Even though I did not read that towelhead remark as derogatory, it was. Snood is right, no racial remarks are acceptable. Snood, I am sorry.

You owe me no apology, Momma Angel.

But it did suprise me coming from you. I can't imagine you'd use that word around someone of Arab descent. And its also hard for me to imagine you didn't already know that.

Snood,

I completely understand. And no, I would never use that word, never. I am very embarrassed and ashamed of myself because I didnt' find the remark as offensive as it is. I have no excuse for it.

This sounds like Apologia pro vita sua, not that I remember the context of that. Thomas Acquinas? (don't get me started, but I like the title).

I generally don't mean offense and if I do you'll know. On the other hand, I don't like to be assumed as meaning offense, even as I know that those protesting too much re meaning it are oft laying about in fields of self-involve.

Then again, isn't that all of us?

"The name Desi, is derived from the word Des meaning a specific Space or Homeland, which for us is the Land of the Five Rivers, Panjab."
http://www.desiradio.org.uk/index.htm

i've heard people from maharashtra refer to themselves as desi also though, perhaps it's a wider used term these days. Our resident Indian members would probably know much better than me.

Sometimes, a towelhead is a guy with the silly appearance of having a big balled up towel on his head.

I don't know what else some people read into it that make it such a big deal.

...and then you make excuses for the vile comments like those by snood...

The interesting new "It's OK to be a racist if you're black or a Democrat" ain't washing.

Merry Andrew,

That wasn't nice. This thread sure is going downhill. Can't we all stop the bad stuff? Please.

Momma Angel,

neither was Lash's comment to Snood. What "vile comments" is she referring to?

MoAn,

This thread started about as far downhill as most of us decent folk care to know. I'm amazed that it is still alive.

Merry Andrew,

I think tempers just flared at this post period. Then what was meant in jest became something bigger. I honestly can't tell you the comments by snood except that he suggested someone go ask a certain group if they liked being called something or not.

I guess that's just why we must all be careful with our words. I just hate to see anyone being upset with anyone. Call it co-dependent, or whatever. I have always been a peacemaker.

Liontamerx,

I have to agree. It pretty much started at the bottom. So, I guess the good news is there's no where to go but up! I love your avatar! I picture that kitten shooting at the dogs across the street here that love to chase my cats.
