Lion Tamer's right. This thread couldn't possibly go any further downhill than the opening post. It's good that you're a peacemaker, Momma. Myself, I keep my Peacemaker (Army .44) loaded and my powder dry.

Because people keep making sweeping statements such as your middle thought. Your assumption that someone who gets worked up over the use of the word Negro would also loot is insulting. This is right up there with the idea of people not being influenced by their surroundings, culture, or upbringing. These things are exactly why we need to keep this discussion going. Prejudice and bigotry are not limited to overt acts of aggression. There are also witnessed in our everyday thoughts and statements.

I was merely wondering why Lash made those particular comments as I did not understand them. I don't like bigotry, racism, prejudice or anything associated with it. I didn't understand why Lash thought it was ok for friends to laugh at the word negro and what Lash was referring to regarding the same people who loot etc.

That "sweeping" statement was Lash's....not mine.

Good God. Use a few key words from the no-no list, and some people seem unable to think past what they are conditioned to expect surrounding those words.

The friends who laughed were black. We were very close. I had been to their homes and knew their children and some of their mothers. We worked together in extraordinary circumstances that tend to bring people close to one another. The reason I'm not "afraid" of the ******* word is that it doesn't trump how you've lived your life and what your true sentiments are---except here, of course. Kudos!

I despise even giving this information. I shouldn't have to. It infuriates me----and not for how it reflects on me---but that anyone shuts off their already marginal exertion in noticing how people treat other people--and lazily use certain words to decide whether or not someone is a racist. You don't have to think that way---and all some sheet wearing, Negro- hating hypocrite has to do is avoid saying certain words. They'll be the pinnacle of racial propriety to you.

This is the reason I despise PC. Not because I want the stamp of approval to go about saying Negro. I obviously don't want the stamp of approval. It's not about me--it's about those who USE the lemming approach to determining who is racist to fool you. They follow your PC rules, and snicker with their friends about nigger jokes.

Those of you who prefer that method of getting through life--go in peace, but know you suck. I'm confident in my efforts to treat everyone justly and without preconceived opinions. I think it's those who feel guilty and cowardly about their own racism are the ones who trumpet bullshit like this without any effort to know what they are talking about.

Anyway, this happens every six months.

For clarification, in case anyone of substance wanders over here and sees my words so outrageously mischaracterized, I said the same people who got all bent out of shape over the use of a mild word like Negro was also the same type of person who would use a disaster to go on a nutty rampage of burning stuff and looting. Similar INTERNALLY.

Momma--

Don't worry about disagreeing with me. I actually sort of hate for someone to try to defend me. It makes me feel obligated. Thanks anyway, though.

Well, this thread has definitely proven one thing. Racism, bigotry, or the ideas and perceptions thereof exist. The tensions and feelings they elicit from people are definitely not ones of love and understanding. It's so easy to see how the world is in the condition it is in today. We EACH and ALL have our own bit of responsibility. None of us are exempt from that.

I just hate to see this turn into a tit for tat argument. Though these are important issues, just how important is this argument in respect to all the other things going on in the world?

I am neither defending nor condemning here, please understand that. I just hate to see this kind of thing happen to people that have otherwise gotten along on other threads. So, let's show the love?http://web4.ehost-services.com/el2ton1/heart.gif

The fact that your black friends laughed at your ill manners does not, necessarily, speak well of you or of them. The fact that a black person laughs at a black racist remark does not make it right. There are blondes that laugh at blonde jokes. There are people who laugh at redneck jokes.

There are people that just accept what their friends say because they are friends and they do not want to say what they really think. I know people of many different nationalities. To me, they are all people and should not be subject to the inappropriate labels that some paste them with.

Except for the fact that you wrote this, I would have thought it was about you.

Does your line that said:

indicate that you consider anybody already on this thread as being without substance?

If you are a part of a large group of friends and friendly acquaintances, who you've known for a while--months, years, and they occasionally greet each other (and you) by saying, "Damn, look at all the Negroes in this place." You may do the same thing a couple of times, especially if it cracks them up-- I got a lot of mileage out of it.

"Negroes" isn't an insult, although you seem to think it is.

If they didn't have a problem with it--who are you to try to act like you do?

You didn't even know the content of what I was talking about--yet, you judged it anyway. And, no. People I consider of substance don't fall into such knee-jerk assumptions, without even attempting to examine what they are talking about.

Why are you trying to dirty up a normal word?
