Howdy Doody was among the first three or four programs I ever saw on TV. I was twelve before anybody I knew had one.
The other first shows were Circus Time (Maybe I got the title wrong) and the first face I ever saw on TV was Art Linklettwer in Art Linkletter's House Party.

Those were the days, eh?

I can remember watching KVOS TV out of Bellingham, Washington in the olden days and watching Funorama.

This was a compilation of things that the studio would run. For example, they would run cartoons, short films, etc. Things like The Lone Ranger, 3 Stooges, and the old cartoons where the animation was great, and actually funny!

Other shows on at the time I wrote of, were, Fearless Fosdick, Beany and Cecil, Crusader Rabbit, Sherry Lewis Show, Romper Room and at night, I Love Lucy, Dragnet, Father Knows Best, Life of Riley, Ozzie and Harriet, December Bride. The first broadcasts had all three networks on one channel. My step father told me I could name every show, what time they came on, who was in them; but, ask me anything else - - -

My father was a pretty smart man. He (1908-1996) was involved with the development of the first computer as we know it. But television? No. It was not ever going to be anything of significance. he said. But perhaps he did know. When we finally did get a tv, it lived in its own room and we could only watch it between 7:30 and 9:00 at night, if we had done our homework. His upbringing as a mid-western Lutheran, perhaps.
My mother became involved in Democratic party politics and the civil rights movement. The tv became more important to her but it never made its way into the living room or dining room or bedrooms of our house.

My mother used to say that she did not want a television. "Who wants to watch people stand there and talk to each other?" It apparently didn't occur to her that plays, movies and singing would also be presented.

Hi, John! Thanks for the personal anecdote.

You must be very proud of your father and his involment with computer development.

To this day, some families still refuse to have TVs in their household. Maybe they're right.

That certainly an interesting point of view!

Do you think this sort of thing happened with radio as well when it first came out in a big way?

Limburg mijn Vaderland

Melody - Hendrik Thyssen, 1909 (1862-1926)

Gerard Krekelberg, 1864-1937

Waar in het bronsgroen eikenhout het nachtegaaltje zingt,
Over het malse korenveld, het lied des leeuweriks klinkt,
Waar de hoorn des herders schalt, langs des beekjes boord.

Refrain:
|: Daar is mijn vaderland,
Limburgs dierbaar oord ! Neutral

2. Waar de brede stroom der Maas, statig zeewaarts vloeit,
Weeldrig sappig veldgewas, kostelijk groeit en bloeit,
Bloemengaard en beemd en bos, overheerlijk gloort.

3. Waar der vaadren schone taal, klinkt met heldre kracht,
Waar men kloek en fier van aard, vreemde praal veracht,
Eigen zeden, eigen schoon, het hart des volks behoort.

4. Waar aan het oud Oranjehuis, het volk blijft hou en trouw,
Met ons roemrijk Nederland, één in vreugd en trouw,
Trouw aan plicht en trouw aan God, heerst van Zuid tot Noord.

"Howdy" doesn't sing, and he's got a lousy voice. Besides, he doesn't know a word of Dutch! Laughing
