Well, one of the things I love about cats is their independence, Lash. Always admired that. And they are much easier to care for because of it.

However, my little lap dog is SO much more affectionate than any cat I've ever had. And he likes to go places with me, too. Dogs live to please you....that is the big difference, I think.

I rather like having both.

I love cats. Reason I don't have one now, it would have to be indoors all the time. They don't last long in my neighborhood.

Indoor cats are much healthier, edgar. All of my cats have been indoor cats.

Problem there, I don't think my dog would tolerate it.

Reyn, I was a confirmed cat person (hated dogs) until a year ago when my husband and son talked me into getting a dog. I remembered what our dear Cav had said here on A2K about his dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and looked up some information about them.

<edit>

I am now a convert.

That certainly is an attractive looking dog. I'm sure you're right about finding the right dog.

For myself, I wouldn't be interested at this point in getting a dog. Our cats are so used to the way things are.

I think it makes a difference, if you mix cats with dogs, that they grow up together, getting used to each other, etc. Otherwise, there's going to be a lot of jealousy.

In some homes that I've seen (not suggesting that you fall in this category) where cats already exist, and then a dog comes into the picture, there's a tendency to pay less attention to the cats. Sometimes, even, they get moved outside, whereby they were wholly inside animals previously. Rather sad. I've got neighbors like that. Sad

I'm glad your dog worked out for you. Smile

You haven't had the right cat. Our male cat absolutely adores my wife.

BUT, don't forget you're comparing apples and oranges. Cats and dogs are different in many ways. It isn't fair to compare one's behaviour to the other.

I agree on both counts. Cats in urban, suburban, and even rural need to be in a secure environment, safe from harm from many things.

They are definitely healthier and live longer!

rewyn : i can undertand your slight aversion to dogs. 'mr bailey' is a small but very protective dog and likes to bark. i was sitting with him on the porch when the mailman was coming and 'explaining' to him that he shouldn't bark at the nice mailman. mr bailey looked at me with rapt attention; i put the finger to my lips and said : 'shhhh' . bailey looked to the other side and gave a short - but understandable - 'whoof' ! he knew exactly that i didn't approve but managed to fool me . hbg

H, isn't it amazing what dogs or cats can pick up on?

I've heard some say that you can't train a cat to do much. I poopoo that one.

Our male cat, Kory, listens quite well if doing something he shouldn't be doing, especially to me. Must be the voice. Anyway, he's got a high sense of right and wrong, and looks sheepish and guilty if caught doing something untoward. Laughing

I believe that, Mr. Doody! (He's BACK!!!)

I've had cats that were extremely attached to me. Almost all of them seem to know when I'm not feeling well and are especially affectionate then. And many have learned tricks. Not nearly as many tricks as they've taught me, however!!!

Our new doggie was raised around 3 cats, Reyn, so he isn't a threat to our two. One of them has figured this out and plays with him. The other is still freaked and hides. But then, he is a nervous, twitchy cat that freaked out and hid at every unfamiliar noise before the dog ever came along. So there's not much difference.

Yes, indeed, Mr. Doody is back. Not only that, but "Chat With Reyn" will be hosting "The Adventures of Mr. Doody" on an ongoing basis, whereby folks will be kept up-to-date as to the mischief he will be getting into. Laughing So, stay tuned!

Did you know the Howdy in the picture is Howdy II. The original didn't look at all like that. I am pretty sure the Walt Disney Company designed the one we all know and love.

Yes, I did know. He's been tweaked a few times. I just happen to like this version, as it's look is more appealing to me.

I've done my research on this one, Edgar...

As a matter of fact, after having a close look at all the HD images available on the web, I couldn't find any original versions.

There used to be one online, when I got my first computer. Can't remember the site now.

Edgar, I stand to be corrected. This is the original version:

Ergo, you can see why I chose my version.
