"So, have you heard our little city in the news with the ex-Liberal candidate, David Oliver? He got booted out after trying to bribe our NDP fellow here".
yep, sure did. personally i'm not really impressed with another election coming up. guess we'll have another minority government; wonder how long they'll last (actually, i think a minority government is not a bad thing, imo. at least they'll have to make some - good or bad - compromises, depending on what side of the fence one sits. i do think we should have fixed election dates. personally i would also prefer a different election system - somewhat along the lines of the german system. it would allow smaller parties entry to parliament without resulting in so-called "splinter-groups. but what i do know ? i just hope to live a peaceful life and wish every other persson on earth the same !).
it's now started to snow, should give a bit of cover for the flowerbeds before the freeze-up starts overnight. take care ! hbg

Well, locally here, it's always a sure thing that the Conservative candidate, Fast, will get in, but it will make it less interesting now that there will be no Liberal running. My wife and I have been speculating as to what will happen with the Liberal vote. Oliver is an unknown, so no reason for folks to vote for him if he runs as an independent.

This is Randy White's old riding and he was very popular. Now, with no Liberal to split the vote, I expect an absolute landslide for Fast.

Unless, for some reason, those Liberal votes go NDP. Maybe it will still be interesting to watch.

Snow? Heaven's that sure has turned around real quickly! Just last night we were watching the CTV National News and it was remarked as to how mild it was right across the whole country.

Hope it's just a small snowfall for you.

Looks like you've got a namesake here, Reyn.
Another Canadian no less.

(unless you're wearing a wig of course)

reyn :
peter milliken, speaker of the house, is the liberal candidate for kingston and the islands(the 1,000 islands) and it seems that he 'll get elected again. the other candidates are all relative unknown - in a political sense.
the one problem that milliken might have is , that in an interview in the local paper ("the kingston whig-standard" - canada's longest running daily newspaper !!! ) , he declared that he didn't even watch the debates - neither did i !!! but i'm not a politico - and that the whole election process is a bit of a bother for him. so he might be getting a little smug for his own good - but perhaps he is looking forward to his pension ?
it's interesting to note that kingston used to be a conservative stronghold - certainly at the provincial level - and is surrounded by the more conservative farm vote around eastern ontario.
(we just had the annual sir john a macdonald ceremony at his gravesite in cataraqui cemetary, attented by both conservatives and liberals - they must all be looking for his vote !)

we had a beautiful sunset around 5 pm and we've been promised sunshine for sunday. i guess we'll bundle up tomorrow and take a walk by the lake - no ice on lake ontario yet. hbg

Mr. Hamburger,

Thanks for the little story. Very interesting.

Our weather remains calm at this hour, but the weather types still say we're going to break the record for most days in a row with rain. Crying or Very sad

MR. REYN ! (hey, i can be as formal as you !)
signing off for the day but want to leave you with a few little jokes i picked from the newspaper .
these little stories were apparently picked up from doctors' notes on patient charts.

discharge status : alive but without my permission

the patient refused autopsy

patient's medical history has been remarkably insignificant with only 40 pound weight gain in the past three days

occasional, constant infrequent headaches

patient has two children, but no other abnormalities

watch what the doctor enters on your chart !!! hbg

Can I call you by your first name? Surely, 'hamburger' isn't your first name, is it? Smile

morning, reyn !
you are right, hamburger is not my first name - and not my family name either.
i picked it as a moniker after the city of hamburg/germany where i grew up and worked in the port before coming to canada - via rotterdam and the dutch freighter "prins willem" of the oranje-line.
my first name is kind of an oddity and for the purposes of a2k identy, i prefer hamburger or hbg, much like c.i. does.
so why don't we both drop the "mr" ? should be a lot easier for both of us.
hope the rain has stopped in your fair city. we have "sunshine" but it's a bit on the cold side - minus 15 C. we'll dress warmly - long johns come in handy ! - and go for a walk . hbg

Good morning hbg! Yes, my wife and I just went for a walk before the rains start again. Cooler this morning. the forecast now is to next Thursday for more of the same.

By the way, you wouldn't happen to play chess, would you?

hi, reyn !
i used to play chess as a boy while i was in vienna, but haven't played since then - would make a poor player/opponent .
my winter hobbies are reading and collecting stamps/postcards and letters and envelopes, of which i heve collected far too much. there are boxes, albums, binders ... in several rooms of the house. luckily mrs h doesn't mind - well, let's say doesn't mind too much. i try to keep things neat and orderly, but slip occasionally.
in the summer we spent most of our time in the garden; we always manage to find something we think we can improve upon.
just came back from a walk in the brisk afternoon wind coming right out of the north-east, minus 12 C, windchill probably minus 20 C. we stopped over at the art-gallery at queen's university. they have quite a collection of dutch masters - including a rembrandt - and also some "very modern" art including a collection of refuse arranged in boxes ! they have something for every taste. their collection of native/eskimo art is the part i always enjoy most.
btw by tuesday we expect the temperature to moderate again - can't wait for spring ! hbg

Well, that darn nice of you to say. We're having chili here, too. Seems to me, it may become very windy somewhere between your location and mine! Laughing

Hbg,

I can see you keep very busy with your various activities. It's too bad you don't still play chess. It would be fun. I have many regular oponents on the chess site that I frequent.

I recently go interested in photography again after decades of not doing much other than family snapshots.

Finding a nice routine since I retired is a priority for me though! Laughing
