A rather warm (if not hot) day today, with temperatures "up" to 27°C, only sun ... until the short, but heavy thunderstorm just now (which nearly eleminated my gerania Sad )

Had and have really good weather here - 30°C today, and even more announced for tomorrow.

Last night, there had been severe damage due to heaviest rain in Bavavria - better now there again.

In Austria, there are these floodings today - Vienna (noon, today) nothing serious (until now, that is).

eastern lake ontario : continuing hot - 30 to 32 C - and humid, but no rain. weather office forecasts the hot weather to continue for at least another two weeks. dark clouds came up at about 6 pm, thunder started to roll - we were hoping for some rain - , suddenly the wind shifted and the clouds moved out over lake ontario : again, no rain ! hbg

Meanwhile, J-B, here in Central Virginia, we just had a kick-ass thunderstorm. We are getting thunderstorms a lot, usually coming over the ridge from the west. Can't really see them until they are upon us.
This sucker came out of the northeast. Banged us good.

Now we had two nice sunny and warm days in a row! Of course, the weekend is not supposed to be that nice - some rain and cooler...

But I am willing it to be a great summer weekend. We are celebrating our towns 750th anniversary!

eastern lake ontario : overcast and very muggy,
actual temp is "only" 26 C (78 F) but humidex is 37 C (about 98 F).
went to a live show yesterday afternoon in a local theatre(partially air-conditioned)' the actors (only 2) were sweating like ... the sweat was just running down their faces, and it was not a physically active show.
the show btw was "trying" by joanna mcclelland glass; it's an autobiographical story about a young canadian woman from the prairies (saskatchewan) who in 1967 became personal secretary to judge francis biddle, former attorney-general under roosevelt and a judge at the nuremberg trial.
a very personal show and superb acting.
go and see it if it comes to your neighbourhood live theatre (original performance at the victory garden theatre in chicago in march 2004). hbg

Extreme weather in Europe
Published: 19 July 2005
FRANCE

Of 96 regional départements, 51 have bans and limits. In the west, water levels are at their lowest since the drought of 1976, and in the south, swarms of locusts have attacked crops. President Jacques Chirac has appealed for water conservation. He asked businesses and farmers in particular to pay attention to the restrictions, and asked everybody to "make an effort to limit abusive and unnecessary use of water."

SPAIN

Suffering worst drought since records began in the 1940s. Much of the country is a tinderbox and fires raged in several regions at the weekend. The driest winter and spring in 60 years have reduced some reservoirs by 80 per cent. Rivers at a third of normal volume. Centre and south believed to have lost half the cereal crop.

PORTUGAL

Taps could soon run dry in the tourist-packed Algarve. Two-thirds of the country is in the grip of a record drought. After a week of forest fires, there are fears of a repeat of a similar dry spell two years ago, when wildfires killed 20 people. Farmland is turning arid, damaging crops and cattle. Losses are estimated at €1bn.

GERMANY

Floods have struck after days of heavy rainfall.

AUSTRIA

Hit by major floods.

CROATIA

Gale-force winds and heavy rain brought floods to Dubrovnik's old town, forcing people to wade through medieval squares.

BULGARIA

Authorities declared "critical" situations for 11 communities hit by heavy rain. At least five people killed.

ROMANIA

A girl, 10, killed after being struck by lightning. Floods in 11 counties across the west, centre and east.

I think of Europe as being relatively compact, so floods and droughts existing together seems strange. I play on-linne Scrabble and have a friend in Spain. She (?) has been telling me about the fires there.
Meanwhile, I heard a story on the news this afternoon about a huge dust storm that is projected to hit Florida next week. No details were provided, other than that the dust was whipped up in the Sahara. I had never heard of that phenomenon before.

Beautiful day today, but hot ........ it's so nice when you're on vacation, you can go laze by the pool any old time, which I did at 11:00 a.m. The pool was just perfect since it rained yesterday and cooled it down just right.
